This old hotel in one of the oldest towns in North Carolina welcomes you to the Winston-Salem haunted history. But the untold story of the resident ghost at the historic Brookstown Inn's haunted room or two may surprise you. If you believe souls or energies can exist beyond the grave, then this unsettled spirit may be the paranormal encounter you finally document. Read on about one of the most haunted places in Winston-Salem.
The Brookstown Inn is a living history museum of sorts. It's located in an old cotton mill that opened in 1837.
Much of the architectural elements of the original structure have been carefully preserved as part of the Brookstown Inn history, and are a distinct focal point for the inn. Exposed brick walls, and wooden ceilings add to the charm of the building. Ordinarily, the guest rooms are bright and airy.
But at nightfall, some guests have reported some odd occurrences...
The resident ghost at Brookstown Inn is reportedly named Sally. Back in the days when this building was still a mill, the fourth floor was used as a dormitory for some of the women working at the mill. Two of them got into a fight and one pushed the other down the elevator shaft.
Now, guests and staff at one of the most haunted places in Winston-Salem often talk of seeing an apparition known as Sally, the woman murdered in that fall into the elevator shaft. She's seen most often up on the fourth floor.
It's not uncommon for guests to report seeing what they believe is Sally's full-body apparition.
And folks taking photos often find when they get home and look closely at their gallery of shots an occasional orb or unexplained shadow in the shape of a figure.
Still more guests say they've been awakened in the night in a Brookstown Inn haunted room, to the sound of a woman screaming.
The Brookstown Inn is located just steps from Old Salem, one of the most haunted places in Winston-Salem and in the entire state. The Old Salem Museum and Gardens is only a few blocks away. And the hotel is adjacent to a visitors center and lovely sunken courtyard.
Have you stayed in this historic old (haunted) mill that's been converted into a lovely place to get acquainted with the Brookstown Inn history? We'd love to know if you encountered Sally!
