More often than not, when people from out-of-state hear that you're from New York they automatically assume that you're from the Big Apple. While this may come as shocking news to you, there are some pretty amazing small towns in New York. While the phrase "small towns" has taken on a new and wider meaning, we decided to make this list a bit more specific for you.
Here are 13 super tiny towns in New York that all have populations of less than a thousand residents:
1. Sylvan Beach
On the shores of Oneida Lake you'll find this super tiny area packed with tons of adventure and fun! With a population of 922 residents and an amusement park, you'll enjoy yourself at Sylvan Beach.
2. Turin
Falling on part of New York's Tug Hill Plateau, this small town is a favorite area of winter activities. As one of the lesser known places in New York, its population is just 315 people.
3. Fishers Island
This island that's under 10-miles long holds a population of just 125 residents! While this remote island falls on New York territory, during the summer months this island is a favorite among Connecticut's residents.
4. Fire Island
Found just south of Long Island's shores, this New York island is an absolute gem. With a magical lighthouse, enchanting wildlife, and a stunning beach this island has a population of only 293 residents.
5. Speculator
Known for having tons to offer its visitors year-round, this Adirondack favorite can be found in Hamilton County. Named after the nearby Speculator Mountain, this village has a population of only 345!
6. Inlet
Another one of our Adirondack Park's small towns, the area of Inlet holds a population of just 133 residents! This town is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts, popular with snowmobilers in the winter and it has a lakeside beach that's lovely to visit in the warmer months.
7. Fleischmanns
This historic area of New York is a must-see. With a population of only 265 residents, the Spillian estate in Fleischmanns offers the perfect place to have a remote and quaint wedding.
8. New Suffolk
Home to one of New York State's smallest school districts, New Suffolk has a population of only 250 residents. It's almost hard to believe this hamlet was a busy port in the 18th century.
9. Cherry Creek
This Chautauqua County town is beautiful and has a name that almost quite literally explains itself. Inside this town you'll find plenty of cherry trees and a calming stream running through the area which holds a population of just 478.
10. Panama
Tucked away in one of our corners lies the village of Panama with a mere population of 426! This remote area offers you the opportunity to explore some of New York's most unreal natural sites like the Panama Rocks.
11. Lyons Falls
Located in Lewis County, the gorgeous Black River flows through this small town, holding a population of only 576 residents. The town is named after the 70-foot falls that calls one of the smallest places in New York home.
12. Schaghticoke
Guaranteed to take your breath away, this gorgeous and remote area of New York is actually pretty well known considering its size. How could an area with a population of 642 residents be anywhere near well known you may ask? It's simply because Schaghticoke hosts our states 3rd oldest fair!
13. Sodus Point
Featuring one of New York's stunning lighthouses, this small and historic village is almost entirely surrounded by water! As one of the smallest places in New York, its population is only 822.
