Sonnenberg Gardens in New York offers a beautiful and affordable outing with multiple restored gardens and a historic mansion.
If you're looking for an inexpensive and fun trip in New York, Sonnenberg Gardens makes for a wonderful afternoon outing! The 50-acre state park is in the Finger Lakes region and is made up of multiple gardens that have been beautifully restored. If you love botanical gardens, you won't want to miss this one!
The gardens are located on the grounds of a mansion that was once the summer home of Frederick Ferris Thompson, a wealthy New York City banker in the late 1800s.
The gorgeous 40-room mansion is open for tours as well.
This property has a multitude of restored gardens, including a conservatory complex with five greenhouses that are open for touring.
The greenhouses were built by Lord & Burnham, one of the most famous conservatory manufacturers of the 1800s. Very few Lord & Burnham greenhouses remain in the United States.
The Rock Garden is a wooded garden that is great for exploring. Plants were cleverly planted so as to show off the natural beauty of the upstate New York area.
One of the most popular gardens in the park is the Japanese garden, thanks to its adorable tea house and small bridge.
The Sub Rosa Garden has no flowers, but is instead planted with greenery to offset the central focal point, a white marble fountain of Zeus.
The site is so peaceful to travel through! You'll feel miles away from your worries and strife as you stroll through the incredible grounds.
The Sonnenberg Gardens are open seasonally from May to October. The park makes for such an affordable outing to enjoy all the beauty of the upstate area! Check out their website for hours and more information.
