Everybody knows that if you go far enough north in the state of New York, you'll end up in Canada. However, you may not know about towns like Rouses Point that sit right on the edge of that border and right on the 49th parallel. The town of Rouses Point, New York, is the northeastern-most town in the state. Not only does it touch the United States - Canada border, but it's also on the shore of Lake Champlain, directly across from Vermont. Rouses Point is a small village in the northeast corner of New York. It may be small in size, but it's big on heart!
This town was named after Jacques Rouse, a French Canadian soldier who fought with Americans during the American Revolution. It's no surprise, then, that Rouses Point is always celebrating the friendship between the United States and Canada.
Directly east of Rouses Point is Lake Champlain. If you cross over the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge, you'll be in Vermont when you get to the other side.
If instead you go north, you'll be headed into Canada. the Rouses Point-Lacolle 223 Border Crossing connects Rouses Point with the town of Lacolle, Quebec on the other side.
There are a lot of historical buildings in Rouses Point. The St. Patrick Catholic Church was built in the 1920s.
The Rouses Point train station was built by the Delaware and Hudson Railway in 1889. Today, it's serviced once a day by Amtrak.
The Au Bord du Lac Bed & Breakfast was once a private home that was completed in 1911.
Nearby, and close to the Canadian Border, is Fort Montgomery. It was built between 1844 and 1871 to protect the United States' northern border.
Today, Rouses Point is a lovely little small town and it's a great place to visit. While you're in town, you might stop and get some pizza at Gino's.
Maybe you'll grab a cup of coffee at Lakeside Coffee Roasters.
Or, you can sit down and have a meal at Best Friends Family Diner.
If you get up early in the morning, the waterfront in Rouses Point is a great place to watch the sunrise.
