The Small Town in New Mexico That Feels Like ‘The Lord of the Rings’

When most people (myself included) think of New Mexico, they picture mountains, adobe buildings, lonesome highways, and barren desert landscapes. Jemez Springs, located about an hour north of Albuquerque, is none of those things. This historic village is a small town straight out of "The Lord of the Rings," featuring lush terrain, extraterrestrial rock formations, and stunning waterfalls.

When you visit Jemez Springs, you leave the hustle and bustle of city life behind and enter a world where time stops and the air is charged with magic. From hiking through the dense forest to soaking in ancient hot springs and exploring a 4,000-year-old mission, this idyllic escape seems too perfect to be real. But that’s the beauty of small towns in New Mexico; they’re always full of surprises waiting to be discovered by adventurous travelers. 

The American Southwest isn't exactly associated with forested hillsides, lush river valleys, or pristine bodies of water, but Jemez Springs has all three of those things. Visiting the town feels like you've traveled through a portal to Middle-earth, trading the arid desert landscape for a verdant oasis. Middle-earth, a fictional continent created by J.R.R. Tolkien for his iconic works, including "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings," is characterized by pointed cliffs, illustrious waterfalls, emerald-green fields, and majestic castles. While you won't find any castles in Jemez Springs, the Jemez Historic Site is very fortress-like in appearance. This cultural landmark preserves the remains of the 16th-century Native American Gíusewa Pueblo and the 17th-century Spanish colonial mission, San José de los Jémez.

The site is open to the public year-round, and walking through its narrow corridors, framed by eight-foot-high stone walls, is an unforgettable experience. If you happen to visit around Christmas time, hundreds of farolitos illuminate the mission in an ethereal glow that resembles the lanterns of Middle-earth.

Fertile meadows and dramatic rock formations are Hallmark characteristics of a Middle-earth landscape, and Jemez Springs has both in abundance. The picturesque scene above showcases the ancient landscape of Valles Caldera National Preserve, a nearly 14-mile-wide volcanic crater perched atop a dormant supervolcano. Its lofty mountains, winding streams, and sprawling fields that paint the ground in a sea of green look like a fantasy novel brought to life.

The Jemez East River Slot Canyon Trail, shown below, is another Tolkien-esque destination, with its rugged bluffs, vast wilderness, and peaceful river that shimmers in the sunlight. Located within the Santa Fe National Forest, the trail is about five miles long and features numerous waterfalls.

Of course, I've saved the best for last. Of all the magical spots in Jemez Springs, Soda Dam looks the most like Middle-earth. This otherworldly place is home to 15 mineral-rich hot springs that have created a distinctive rock formation that spans the Jemez River. Some sections are window-like in appearance, resembling Tolkien's signature round Hobbit doors.
