1. Navajo Lake

Our first stop on this road trip is Navajo Lake, the second-largest lake in New Mexico. If you love boating (both motorized and non-motorized boating is allowed), water-skiing, and fly fishing, this lake is for you! Not only that, but you can spend the night at one of the park's many campgrounds and enjoy some extended time here.

2. Heron Lake

Next up is Heron Lake at Heron Lake State Park. This pristine lake is a place you'll love to swim in, if that's something you enjoy. Other than that, fishing, boating, and camping are other wonderful recreational options here.

3. Abuquiu Lake

The gorgeous Abiquiu Lake may be a man-made reservoir created by the damming of the Chama River but its crystal-clear waters are a stunning sight. Not only is the lake scenic but the areas surrounding it are as well. You'll want to take your time here so maybe book a campsite at Riana Campground which sits atop a bluff overlooking the lake.

4. Santa Rosa Lake

Located in eastern New Mexico, Santa Rosa Lake is another lovely body of water offering fishing, swimming, and boating as well as camping and hiking. This is also a popular spot for horseback riding and birdwatching.

5. Bottomless Lakes State Park

Bottomless Lakes State Park is actually the oldest park under the New Mexico State Parks umbrella. Here you'll not find just one but nine lakes, so this is a worthwhile place to spend a few days if you have the time. However, if you enjoy swimming, Lea Lake is the only one that allows it. Otherwise, fishing and boating are popular activities throughout the park.

6. Elephant Butte Lake State Park

Located at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, Elephant Butte Lake is the largest lake in the state. Spending a few days here is almost a necessity if you want to experience all the park has to offer. If you have your own boat, you'll want to bring it here to maximize your adventures on the water.
