For a quintessential Nebraska getaway full of character and charm, I would put Hastings at the top of your list. From its historic streets and inviting shops to its welcoming parks, Hastings has a great, relaxed weekend vibe. This Nebraska college town is easy to explore, boasting a walkable downtown and plenty of unique restaurants—plus, it has a surprising claim to fame that’s sure to make you smile.

Founded in 1872 at the crossroads of the Burlington and Missouri River and the St. Joseph and Denver City Railroads, Hastings has successfully preserved much of its historical integrity over the years. Walking through the Heartwell Park and Central Hastings neighborhoods, it’s easy to see why both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The brick buildings, tree-lined streets, and well-kept homes create a genuine, settled atmosphere that naturally draws visitors in to explore.

Downtown Hastings invites you to wander. With a mix of eclectic shops, local boutiques, and cozy cafes, there are plenty of spots to grab a coffee or discover something unique. For a deeper look into the area's history, the Hastings Museum—located next to Highland Park—is a must-see for history buffs. Built in 1939 through the Works Progress Administration, it claims to be the largest municipal museum between Denver and Chicago. Inside, exhibits showcase the town’s fascinating past and local innovation.

One story that always draws attention is that of Edwin Perkins, a local inventor. In 1927, he developed a powdered drink mix called Fruit Smack. After experimenting and refining the recipe, he rebranded it as Kool-Aid, which quickly became a household favorite across America. The museum shares how this small-town invention grew into an iconic cultural staple, connecting Hastings to a legacy recognized nationwide.

Note: The current Kool-Aid exhibit will close on Jan. 1, 2026, as the museum prepares a refreshed version debuting in March—so be sure to catch it while it’s still on display.

For a breath of fresh air, head just north of the museum to Lake Hastings Park and stroll along the waterfront trail that loops around the lake. It’s a beautiful spot to pause for a moment and take in the scenery. The park’s natural beauty captures the peaceful, slower pace that makes small-town Nebraska so appealing.

Hastings College sits at the heart of the community and has shaped much of the town’s culture since 1882. The 120-acre campus, dotted with classic brick buildings, has a lively collegiate energy and is home to 24 varsity sports teams. Whether you’re attending a game, walking the grounds, or admiring the architecture, the college adds another layer to Hastings’ unique character

With its arts scene, dining, shopping, and rich history—including introducing the world to Kool-Aid—this Nebraska college town is more than just a small town; it’s a destination that invites exploration. Pack your car, plan a day trip, and get ready to discover all the charm, culture, and stories that make Hastings a standout Nebraska college town.
