This Missouri Town Is The Grandest Winter Wonderland You’ll Ever Visit
Clarksville, Missouri transforms into a winter wonderland perfect for nature tourism and bald eagle watching.
A snowy landscape just makes everything so much more magical, so much grander. This tiny Missouri town transforms into a wonderland after a fresh snowfall, and it should be on your radar when you’re looking for your next day trip. It’s perhaps best known for its nature tourism, making it a must-visit if you love spending time outdoors.
Nestled along the Mississippi River and Great River Road, Clarksville is a small Missouri river town that’s conveniently located just 75 miles from St. Louis and less than an hour from Hannibal.
Wintertime provides an idyllic backdrop for a day trip to this river town that hosts several popular events throughout the year. Each year, for example, kicks off with the Clarksville Eagle Days.
Clarksville is well-known for having one of the largest winter populations of bald eagles in Missouri.
The popular event generally takes place the last weekend of January at Lock & Dam #24. An observation deck is open to the public, so bring your binoculars and your camera. Eagles Days 2023 is set for January 28 and 29.
Even if you can’t make it to Eagle Days, you still have plenty of time to watch the bald eagles. Eagle season runs from December through February, and Clarksville is a prime town for viewing these majestic birds.
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, plan a visit to Calumet Creek Nature Area, too. Marvel at local wildlife as you trek along the 2.1-mile Calumet Creek Nature Trail.
The trail is considered moderate, so make sure you wear sturdy boots and are up for the challenge.
When you’re not exploring outdoors or admiring the Mississippi River from Clarksville Riverfront Park, stay toasty with a visit to the Clarksville Antique Center or one of the town’s other shops.
A day of exploration usually leads to a hearty appetite. Make your way to Cherry’s Bar & Grill, which dishes up such favorites as burgers and tenderloin sandwiches.
