The Missouri Beach Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar
Escape the Kansas City crowds in Paradise, a tiny Missouri beach town on the shores of Smithville Lake. Enjoy local ice cream, scenic trails, and quiet sandy beaches.
I like to look for places with quirky names, and when I saw a place called Paradise on our Missouri road trip, I immediately saved it to my maps. From the look of the local ice cream parlor, picturesque Sailboat Cove, and swirling swathes of golden beaches, it seemed like this hidden beach town in Missouri was more than just a nostalgic name. Despite its population being fewer than 100 people, I was right.
Start Your Beach Day at the Paradise Ice Cream Parlor

If we’re being honest, I will take a 30-mile detour just for a good, roadside ice cream shop. I’m a sucker for a walk-up window and soft serve ice cream cone with a side of sizzling French fries. Plop it next to a secret beach, and we just might camp in the parking lot for a few nights. The Paradise Ice Cream Parlor has those vibes. From the giant, pink ice cream cone on the roof to the T-bird booth, vinyl record decor, and the life-size Barbie box inside, you just know the double-scoop is going to be next level. We stopped here first, of course, and carried dripping cones in hand all the way to the beach.
When To Visit for Fewer Crowds

Our spring road trip to Missouri was long before beach season, but it didn’t matter. In the early days of April, before the trees are even green, the warm spring sun was convincing enough to ditch our shoes and stick our toes in the chilly water. With no one around but a few deer peeking out from the brambles, we spent an hour or more leaving the first footprints in the sand.
Find Epic Water Views at Sailboat Cove

You can easily spend a full day exploring the 175-mile shoreline of Smithville Lake. We did so, not by looping around, but by roving back and forth in no particular order. After our waterfront excursion, we found ourselves back in Paradise, considering a second ice cream cone, on the way to Sailboat Cove. Instead, we settled for stuffing our pockets full of posies, or at least the purple henbit blooms peeking out above several dozen white sailboats bobbing on the water.
Take the Scenic Route on the Smokey and Davey Trail

Distancing ourselves from the quiet beach town in Missouri for the last time, we unhitched our bikes to hop on the Smokey and Davey Trail. The paved, multi-use 3.5-mile path is just a snippet of the 60 miles of trails that lace around Smithville Lake. We loved it for its soft, sloped entry through blooming trees en route to water views and thickets full of abundant bird song. We met many locals on the path, too, including zooming electric scooters, couples pacing their steps, and mothers pushing strollers into the wilderness.
Why This Missouri Beach Town Flies Under the Radar
Despite being less than 30 miles from Kansas City, Paradise remains a relatively hidden beach town in Missouri. Although it’s not exactly unknown, it receives far fewer visitors than urban beaches like Shawnee Mission Beach and Kill Creek Park. It’s also less popular than Bloomington Beach at Clinton Lake and Hillsdale Lake Beach, likely because of its comparative remoteness and lack of services. But for those seeking a quieter beach day with extra charm, Paradise and Smithville Lake are the ideal day trip for a city escape.
