Winter Transforms This Minnesota Riverfront Town Into a Peaceful Getaway
If you're looking for a laid back winter getaway, look no further than Taylors Falls; it's one of the best winter towns in Minnesota
I'd say a healthy percentage of us love wintertime in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. With tons of places to go, things to do, and events to attend, the season can sometimes feel like whirlwind. That's why I like to slow the pace sometimes, find a spot to sneak away for a day or two, and enjoy winter on my own terms. Of course, even that opens the door to a whirlwind of choices. But one place that I think does winter just right is the charming St. Croix River town of Taylors Falls. In fact, I'd argue that it's one of the best winter towns in Minnesota.
When I'm in Taylors Falls, my first order of business is usually a stop at Coffee Talk, a sweet little coffee shop in a gingerbread house located on the north end of downtown Taylors Falls. In the summer, you can enjoy the cafe's awesome patio against the forest river bluff. But this time of year, the cozy, inviting interior is almost as warming as the shop's tasty coffee beverages.
Next up is a quick hike in one of east-central Minnesota's loveliest parks. The glacial potholes area of Interstate State Park is right in town, and the basalt gorge of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway's Dalles area is as dramatically beautiful in winter as it is in the summertime. A word of caution, though: The trails are not maintained in winter, so you'll probably want either snowshoes or traction devices, like Yaktrax, before you head out.
If you're looking for even more space to explore, head a few minutes north of town to Wild River State Park, where you'll find 35 miles of trails on the forested bluffs above and along the forested banks of the St. Croix River. A heated trail center, as well as snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, will help you get out on the park's 19 miles of groomed ski trails.
Those seeking more of an adrenaline rush will find it less than 10 minutes north of Taylors Falls at Wild Mountain, which maintains 25 ski trails served by nine lifts. There's also a snow tubing park if you prefer to get your speed fix while sitting.
When you're finished with all your outdoor adventures, head back into town for a burger at Romayne's on Main. Housed in a former Victorian home, this sports bar and eatery serves up tasty, casual fare in a scenic setting.
