I Went to Granite Falls, and I Don’t Know Why I Didn’t Visit This Small Town in Minnesota Sooner
Granite Falls is one of our writer's new favorite small towns in Minnesota, and it should definitely be on your bucket list
I love exploring the incredible and diverse natural beauty that can be found in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but truly, one of my absolute favorite things to do is visit small towns in Minnesota. Whether it's a quirky local museum, a down-home diner, or a unique landmark, most small towns seem to have something wonderful to offer. I'd love to visit them all, in fact! However, between the sheer size of our state and other commitments in my life (sleeping, for example), I may not get to all 1,782 of them. But when I do come across a new-to-me town that simply exudes charm, I'm always a little disappointed that I hadn't discovered it sooner. I felt this most recently when I had occasion to visit the delightful, western Minnesota community of Granite Falls, home to 2,600 friendly folks.
I've actually passed through Granite Falls a couple of times, most recently to visit the former Upper Sioux Agency State Park before it was deauthorized as a state park and returned to the Upper Sioux Community. As I was leaving the area, I saw a sign for Gneiss Outcrops SNA, but I was losing light and had another commitment, so I knew I'd have to make a return trip - and I'm glad I did. Gneiss Outcrops was fascinating - it's home to some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet - but I was really charmed by Granite Falls itself.
At first glance, downtown Granite Falls looks like it's frozen in time, a snapshot of the mid-20th century. And some of the businesses lean into the classic small-town vibe, like Carl's Bakery, which turns out wonderful pastries, donuts, and scratch-made breads. The coffee is hot and strong, and you can even order breakfast or lunch from the deli selection. Falls Cafe and Canoe is another great downtown option for breakfast or lunch, which, in warm weather, you can order along with a canoe rental. Unbeatable combo, right?
Downtown Granite Falls really highlights the beauty along the stretch of the Minnesota River, as well. The historic Roebling Suspension Bridge has connected pedestrians with the far side of the river and Rice Park - while treating them to views of the falls over the dam and the valley downriver - since 1935.
The riverfront below the bridge is a walkable stretch of pedestrian-friendly plazas and green spaces that extend downstream for a few blocks. Colorful murals showcase the community's appreciation of its residents' artistic talents. It's quite a pleasant place for a riverside stroll.
I had a wonderful time on my short visit to Granite Falls and look forward to returning. When I visited, I stayed in a hotel on the edge of the city, but next time, I'd like to stay within walking distance of the downtown area. A handful of Airbnbs fit the bill, like this cozy two-bedroom cottage that's just a few blocks from the river. With its private garden area, it looks like the perfect place to stay for a summer visit to the area. What are some of your favorite small towns in Minnesota? We'd love to hear about them!
