This Unexpected Attraction in Minnesota Is One of the Best Road Trip Stops You’ve Never Considered
Uncover one of the best road trip stops in Minnesota at the Minnesota Discovery Center. Ride a vintage trolley and explore the Iron Range on your next getaway.
When planning a road trip or weekend getaway, I'm usually on the hunt for hidden gems that offer more than just a quick photo opportunity. I think one of the best places to find such spots in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is the Iron Range. For example, just outside of Chisholm, you'll stumble upon one of the best road trip stops in Minnesota. Located on the edge of this charming town, the Minnesota Discovery Center is a 660-acre cultural and natural hub that combines pioneer and industrial history along with some unexpected (for me, anyway) opportunities for year-round outdoor recreation. If you love a good detour as much as I do, this gem absolutely belongs on your Bold North bucket list.
Why This Stop Is Worth the Detour
Minnesota's Iron Range is renowned for its iron ore mining operations and its rugged Northwoods landscape, but few places—especially since the closure of Hill Annex Mine State Park—lean into the region's dual character in the same way that the Minnesota Discovery Center does. That's why I think it's one of the most unexpected places in Minnesota. Originally opened in 1977 as the Iron Range Interpretive Center (later renamed the Iron Range Discovery Center, then Ironworld), this sprawling campus is the state's largest museum complex outside of the Twin Cities. It was originally intended to honor the diverse immigrant population who flocked to northern Minnesota to work the iron ore mines at the turn of the 20th century.
Instead of just a few dusty display cases, though, the center provides a completely immersive experience. You get to explore a 33,000-square-foot museum comprised of interactive exhibits that cover everything from the region's geology to the gritty reality of early labor movements. It's a thoughtful homage to the area's blue-collar roots—one that ensures the stories of the hardworking folks who built the local economy are not forgotten.
What To See and Do Here
You could easily spend a full day exploring everything the center has to offer. One of the highlights is a ride on the center's vintage 1920s trolley. The narrated, 2.5-mile journey winds along the edge of an abandoned mine pit, now filled with water, and drops you off at a recreated mining ghost town where you can explore historic homes and buildings. If you're feeling competitive, challenge your traveling companion(s) to a round of mini-golf on the museum's 19-hole Pellet Pete course.
The center is also a massive playground for outdoor enthusiasts. It shares a footprint with the highly-rated Redhead Mountain Bike Park, where you'll find world-class singletrack that cuts across the rugged, red-rock-and-forest landscape. If you prefer to spend your time on the water, rent a kayak or canoe right on site and paddle on the crystal-clear surface of the flooded mine pit. In winter, visitors enjoy fat biking, sledding, and cross-country skiing at the center.
Where to Eat or Stretch Your Legs in Chisholm
After spending a few hours immersed in regional history and natural beauty, you'll definitely want to recharge before getting back behind the wheel. The campus is directly connected to the Mesabi Trail, a paved multi-use route that crosses more than 100 miles of the Iron Range and serves as a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail. If you need a little more leg-stretching, it's wonderful for a quick walk before you get back in the car. Then take the short drive into downtown Chisholm and grab a treat at Black Bear Bakery or a classic meal at Valentini's Supper Club, a beloved local institution that's been serving up incredible Italian-American comfort food for decades.
Whether you're planning a dedicated vacation to the Iron Range or just looking for a gem of a pit stop on your way to another Up North destination, the Minnesota Discovery Center truly delivers.
