3 Scenic Hiking Trails Surround The Small Town Of Ely, Minnesota
The small town of Ely, Minnesota, sits tucked away in northeastern Minnesota within the Superior National Forest. This area shows how the state earned the nickname "Land of 10,000 Lakes." There are also a lot of great hiking trails in the region. Maybe not 10,000 of them, but still quite a few. Here are a few that aren't too far from town.
1. The Big Island Trail is the shortest and easiest trail on this list, beginning in Semer Park on the northwest side of town. The trail leads you to Big Island, located in Schaefer Bay on Shagawa Lake. The trail is considered easy and generally takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
You won't need a boat to reach this island with this simple and stunning little bridge.
2. The second trail on our list is a scenic mile-long hike that leads to Kawishiwi Falls, located about 10 minutes east of town on Fall Lake.
The trail is considered easy by most but may be slippery at times and has several steep cliffs nearby.
3. The last trail is for those who are up for more of a challenge. This 6.3-mile trail will take you around Bass and Dry Lakes and takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. Comfortable shoes and bug spray are highly recommended.
The rocky trail has some rough terrain, but the views are extremely rewarding. Dogs are also welcome but must remain leashed.
With all the lakes, trails, and scenic views, Minnesota is a great state for anyone with an adventurous spirit. Have you made the trek around any of these trails? Let us know what you thought in the comments!
