The state of Michigan is kind of famous for its lakes. In fact, the Mitten State borders four of the Great Lakes: Huron, Superior, Erie, and, of course, Michigan. While these lakes are indeed great, there are more than 60,000 lakes in the state - and more than 25,000 that are one acre or larger! With that many lakes, it sounds like we've got some exploring to do!
With that in mind, we've created a stunning Michigan lake road trip. This trip is short, sweet, and filled with breathtaking lake views.
This gorgeous Michigan Lake road trip takes you through some of the lesser-known lakes in the northeast portion of the state. So, make sure your phone is charged, cause you're going to want to snap a lot of photos.
1. Gaylanta Lake - Vienna Township, MI
We recommend kicking off your lake road trip bright and early to catch the sunrise over Gaylanta Lake. Located in Montmorency County, Michigan, this gorgeous lake is a perfect peaceful start to your Mitten State lake road trip. This is a great spot for those who love to fish. Anglers report catching a variety of bass, pike, and tiny, colorful pumpkinseed, which is a species of fish I'd never even heard of until this writing!
2. De Cheau Lake - Briley Township, Michigan
The next stop on your Michigan lake road trip is De Cheau Lake, just 20 minutes down the road in Briley Township. Like the previous stop, De Cheau Lake comes equipped with a boat launch, in case you want to get out on the water. This 39-acre lake is a peaceful spot for swimming or camping, as well. Birdwatchers will want to take note of this little-known Michigan lake because De Cheau Lake is designated as a lake loon habitat.
3. Shoepac Lake - Allis Township, Michigan
Shoepac Lake is a must-visit stop on our Michigan lake road trip. This lovely lake is known for paddle sports and fishing. The boat launch at this Michigan lake is perfect for kayaks and canoes. Before leaving this lake, it's worth taking a short hike to see the sinkholes nearby.
4. Lake Nettie - Bismarck Township, Michigan
Our final stop of this gorgeous lake road trip in northeastern Michigan is a 30-minute drive from Shoepac Lake. Lake Nettie is a 278-acre lake located in Bismarck Township, Michigan. All reports point to this lake being an incredible fishing spot, with walleye, bass, pike, and crappie. Even if you don't plan to fish, this serene stop makes the perfect ending to our Michigan lake road trip.
I realize that I talked about fishing a lot on this road trip and there's a simple reason for that - there are very few things that taste better than a fresh fish that you caught yourself in a Michigan lake. Don't have a pole? Don't worry. Here's one that's great for beginners and seasoned anglers alike.
No matter where a Michigan road trip takes you, you're sure to find gorgeous views. After all, Michigan is one of the most staggeringly beautiful best kept secrets in the country.
