St. Ignace sits at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, across the straits from its sister town, Mackinaw City.
St. Ignace is on the Upper Peninsula, Mackinaw City on the Lower.
It’s a charming and lively lakefront port that comes even more to life in the summer, making it a perfect weekend destination during warm weather months.
The Bayfront Farmers Market takes place weekly from July through Labor Day weekend.
During the same period, you’ll find nightly music as part of the city’s Music by the Bay series, which highlights local artists, in particular.
Every Sunday during July and August, folks can attend the Kiwanis Beach Bash, with live music, free beach balls, and available kayak rentals. The beach party starts mid-afternoon and lasts until early evening.
Folks are also treated to weekly fireworks displays on Saturday nights during the dog days of summer.
Overlapping with these events, St. Ignace typically plays host to the Intercontinental Indigenous Art Show, which runs from mid-August through early September.
The works of indigenous artists from throughout the western hemisphere are showcased, and the public is invited to participate in events and workshops during the show’s run.
Summer in St. Ignace culminates in the Rendezvous at the Straits Powwow. It’s a two-day, open-to-the-public event that takes place at the Father Marquette National Memorial.
With so much going on during the summer in this charming town, you’re sure to find plenty of things to do in St. Ignace over a summer weekend - in fact, a single weekend may not be enough! There are plenty of lodging options to choose from in the area, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a weekend that will work, as long as you book in advance.
