The Up-and-Coming City in Massachusetts That’s Perfectly Sized
Just outside of Boston, this up-and-coming city in Massachusetts promises something, from eclectic restaurants to outdoor activities, for everyone.
Life in a big city promises plenty of excitement. Something is always happening, and we can usually meet people from all over the world in large cities like Boston. While I’ve always loved the fast pace of large cities, I prefer living somewhere on the outskirts, where I can hop on the T and arrive in the city in minutes. That’s one of many reasons this up-and-coming city in Massachusetts has become such a popular destination for those relocating and for visitors, especially in recent years.
Welcome to Medford! Right along the Mystic River, Medford’s close proximity to Boston makes it an idyllic destination for those who love the big city but prefer living or staying in a much smaller town. In comparison, Boston’s population tallies around 673,458, while Medford (as of 2024) has approximately 59,898 residents. In 2022, it was considered one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, with a growth spurt of more than five percent between 2021 and 2022.
While the population growth went down more than one percent in 2023, Medford's growth has since climbed, and it remains one of Massachusetts's most popular up-and-coming cities. It’s easy to see why. Just 10 minutes from Boston, the cozy city is well-known in its own right. It is home to Tufts University, the historic Chevalier Theatre, and Wright’s Tower. Amelia Earhart once lived in Medford, and while there’s some controversy over it, James Lord Pierpont wrote Jingle Bells here in 1850. Others assert Pierpont wrote the beloved Christmas song in Savannah, Georgia, in 1857.
The up-and-coming city has something for everyone, from outdoor lovers to foodies. Mystic Lakes State Park boasts a full menu of family-friendly activities, including swimming at Shannon Beach, hiking, boating, and picnicking. Overlooking the Mystic River, Torbert Macdonald State Park appeals to those who enjoy walking, hiking on paved trails, and picnicking. If you prefer local parks and playgrounds, you’ll find two dozen in Medford that offer everything from a playground and basketball courts at Barry Park to a beach at Wright’s Pond.
Medford is also known for its eclectic selection of restaurants. Indulge in sushi at the highly-rated Matsuba Izakaya, Mediterranean cuisine at Semolina Kitchen & Bar, authentic Italian at FiorItaly, and American classics at The Ford Tavern. For some tasty sandwiches, including a vegan option, head over to Deep Cuts Brewery. To say Medford is a hidden gem town for foodies would be an understatement! Anyone who loves incredible cuisine should come here—you won't be disappointed!
With all it has to offer from parks to restaurants, history, and more, we hope we put Medford on your radar. Find more information on the official website of the City of Medford, or stop by the Facebook page of Medford, MA, USA.
