With so much to see in busy Massachusetts cities like Boston and Worcester, smaller towns tend to get overlooked as travel destinations. These spots are often filled with unique charm and have lots of hidden gems to discover and explore. I've experienced fantastic vacations in small towns such as Sheffield and Stockbridge. Now it is time to tell you about a destination that is a little closer to home. Rowley is a beautiful little town that is a perfect place for an outing. But be sure to keep your eyes peeled; if you blink, you just might miss it.
Rowley is located about 38 miles north of Boston and is a little more than 20 square miles. With a population of less than 6,500, the small town maintains a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Rowley was incorporated way back in 1639, and you can still find several historic buildings here.
This quaint town is also filled with beautiful outdoor areas. Hunsley Hills Conservation Area is a scenic spot for a short, easy hike. The nearby Hellcat Interpretive Trail at Plum Island’s Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is an accessible boardwalk trail that is a great spot for birdwatching.
Rowley is also known as a prime spot for antiquing. There are several antique stores and markets in town, but the best (in my opinion) is Todd Farm Antiques. This place is filled with great finds such as vintage furniture, collectibles, and handmade items. The main buildings are open for shopping year-round, and there is also an eclectic outdoor flea market that operates from around April until November.
My favorite place to eat in Rowley is the Village Pancake House, a delicious breakfast and brunch spot housed in a historic building that is over 350 years old.
The last time I visited I had a wonderful breakfast and learned a little about my family’s ancestral roots in the process.
Rowley also has some great spots for dinner, including Casey J's Tavern + American BBQ Catering (formerly
" target="_blank">The American BBQ and Smokehouse Grill).
With an extensive menu of BBQ items, tavern favorites, and lots of yummy cocktails, this place has something that everyone will enjoy.
If you like wine, the Mill River Winery is a must-stop while you are in town. This small vineyard produces some fantastic vino and the tasting events here are so much fun.
Sipping a glass on the Mill River's patio is the perfect way to end a day in town.
While you can probably explore most of these Rowley attractions in one day, there is a lot more to see on the North Shore. The nearby towns of Ipswich and Topsfield offer some wonderful outdoor adventures. If you are making a weekend out of your trip, I suggest staying at the lovely
" target="_blank">Briar Barn Inn. This cozy inn is a wonderful spot for a relaxing getaway. The inn has a spa, pool, restaurant, and lots of beautiful outdoor areas to enjoy.
