I’ve Been Gatekeeping 5 Little-Known State Parks in Maryland

What is your favorite place to gatekeep in Maryland? Aside from several local restaurants, I like the fact that Patterson Park is still one of our best-kept secrets. Unfortunately, we can’t keep all our local gems in Maryland under lock and key. Eventually, the word will get out and will spread like wildfire, especially on social media.

While destinations like Assateague State Park see millions of folks every year, I enjoy that there are a handful of low-key playgrounds that tourists have yet to discover. These are the spots where the trails are peaceful, you can breathe and enjoy nature without the added crowds. Check out my list of the little-known state parks in Maryland that locals like to gatekeep. Some of these destinations might even surprise you.

1. Chapman State Park, Indian Head

I find it amazing that we can live in a state for years and still miss out on exploring some really cool places. Take, for instance, Chapman State Park. The park was created to preserve the Mt. Aventine Mansion, the historic home of the Chapman family, known for their connection to the Founding Fathers. If you’re a history buff, this is the place to be. Enjoy soaking up stunning waterfront views? This underrated state park in Maryland has one of the best seats in the house. Imagine you and your furry bestie strolling along the shoreline of the mighty Potomac River without another person in sight. You can do that and more, so I recommend adding this hidden state park to your list before the word gets out.   

2. Patuxent River State Park, Brookeville

Perhaps it’s because it remains mostly undeveloped that Patuxent River State Park has flown under the radar. Don’t let that fool you, this recreation area has plenty going for it. You can easily spend a day here hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting, too. My favorite part? The unmarked social trails let you create your own adventure without the rush of crowds. For those in the know, this is the kind of secluded place where you can get away from it all — literally. Bring your pup and leave your worries behind to soak up the rustic beauty at this lesser-known state park in Maryland.  

3. Bohemia River State Park, Chesapeake City

As one of the newer additions to the Maryland park system, most locals have no idea that Bohemia River State Park exists. If you ask me, this recreation area might be one of Maryland’s best-kept secrets. Since it’s still in its developmental phase, you’ll feel like you’re discovering something new while you hike the peaceful woodland trails. With access to the shoreline of the Bohemia River, folks can boat, paddle, or fish on the tranquil waterways. Horseback riding and biking are popular here, too, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. Before you know it, this riverfront gem in Maryland might become a new hot spot for those needing a quiet escape. And it also gives you another reason to plan a day trip to Chesapeake City.   

4. Palmer State Park, Street

Containing the historical ruins of the Husband Flint Mill and Deer Creek Iron Works, Palmer State Park attracts lots of history lovers. But there are so many other reasons to visit. There’s a flowing creek, miles of trails, plenty of wildlife, and the park is covered with pretty wildflowers in the spring and summer. This haven is great no matter the time of year; however, it really comes alive in the fall. Seeing the glowing hardwoods against the backdrop of Deer Creek will take your breath away. If you’re a professional or amateur photographer, you’ll find lots of inspiring nature scenes to capture. Can you blame me for wanting to keep this dreamy state park in Maryland a secret? I think not!

5. St. Clement’s Island State Park, Coltons Point

Tucked on 40 acres on a remote island, I consider St. Clement's one of the most unique state parks in Maryland. Since the park is only accessible by private or seasonal boat, you won’t find too many tourists here (if any). This isolated park is where Maryland’s first English colonists landed in the 17th century. Expect historical sites and a replica of the iconic Blakistone Island Lighthouse, which helped navigate ships along the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River in the 19th century. While on this island paradise, you can kick back, sink your feet in the sand, and enjoy the laid-back beach vibes. This off-the-beaten-path state park in Maryland is one that belongs on your list.
