With fall’s return just around the corner, Marylanders are also welcoming hundreds of college students back onto campus, and the scenic college towns in our great state will soon be bustling with life again. Among the most charming of these communities in Maryland is Salisbury, the little town on the eastern shore that’s been the home of Salisbury University since 1925. Located right along the banks of the Wicomico River, this town has infused campus life with a distinct eastern shore flavor that deserves to be visited and explored. There’s tons of great history, delicious food, and the fascinating craft of wildfowl art to be discovered here, along with much more! Without further ado, here are some of our favorite things to do in Salisbury, Maryland:
Pemberton Historical Park is located on the west side of Salisbury, and it offers visitors a fascinating blend of history and natural wonder. The park is built around Pemberton Hall, a former plantation that’s been around since 1741. There are 4.5 miles of trails through the park as well, and there’s a nature center which is a pleasure to explore.
Rise Up Coffee, which was recently voted the best coffee in Maryland, began on the eastern shore over 15 years ago and has been a staple ever since. It’s the perfect way to start your day when visiting Salisbury - just know that everyone else feels this way too, so expect a line!
The Salisbury Zoo started in 1954 with a couple of animal donations, and it has exploded into one of the best little zoos in all of North America ever since. Today the zoo houses dozens of species of animal, including one of my absolute favorites, the red-necked wallaby.
If you’re looking for an atmospheric place to grab a drink and unwind, there’s no better stop in Salisbury than The Brick Room. This is an elegant and relaxed pub downtown that serves up great cocktails and stunning views.
Of course, being out on Maryland’s eastern shore means the seafood is fresh and plentiful. And seafood in Salisbury means Brew River, the dockside bar and seafood house that hosts live music and college nights for the local students.
The Island Creamery is Salisbury’s sweetest treat, a colorful little shop that offers homemade fresh ice cream with tons of seasonal flavors to choose from!
