I Don’t Kayak, But This Paddle Trail in Maryland Is Seriously Mind-Blowing
Searching for a fun activity for the new year? Drift along the iconic Baltimore Harbor skyline on the best paddle trail in Maryland.
Hanging out at the Inner Harbor is a rite of passage for anyone who lives in the DMV (DC-Maryland-Virginia) area. I have spent many evenings bar hopping at Fell’s Point, eating dinner with waterfront views, or simply strolling along the Patapsco River on the brick-paved promenade. With bars and restaurants, museums, shopping, concerts, and more, you’ll never run out of fun things to do at the Harbor.
However, if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably never considered launching a kayak to explore the river. Are you searching for something new — a fun outdoor activity in Maryland for the new year? Add this Inner Harbor North Shore Paddle Trail to your list. Walking along the promenade is cool, but seeing the Baltimore skyline from the water is a game-changer. Some have said that this is one of the best paddle trails in Maryland, and I can’t disagree.
The Inner Harbor Paddle Trail is part of the Baltimore Blueway, a network of water trails along the scenic rivers in Baltimore. The six-mile trail is a unique urban adventure where kayakers can drift across the calm waters of the Patapsco River. Currently, the launch area is located at the boat ramp at Canton Waterfront Park, but more spots will be added in the future.
Since the paddle trail is considered moderate, I wouldn’t recommend it for beginner kayakers. The route requires some paddling skills and experience in the water with other boats and other watercraft. If you’re a beginner and want to experience this trail, I suggest sharing a tandem kayak with an experienced paddler, booking a tour, or taking lessons from an outfitter company.
Once you’re out on the water, expect a big treat and spectacular views of Baltimore’s vibrant waterway. You’ll drift past some of the most iconic buildings and landmarks at the Harbor. On the trip, you’ll see the National Aquarium, historic ships and submarines from the Inner Harbor Maritime Museum fleet, the Instagram-famous Mr. Trash Wheel, and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse, just to name a few. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the ducks, herons, egrets, and other waterfowl playing in the water.
If that weren’t enough, the views of the Baltimore skyline will leave you speechless. The trip is recommended for the daytime, but if you’re brave enough to paddle the waters at night, the skyline is extra magical as the lights glisten across the river. This paddle trip is by far one of the coolest things to do at the Harbor. As one kayaker stated, “This was so cool. I’ve been coming to the Harbor for years, but never seen it quite like this...Loved it and will definitely return.”
The beauty of this trail is that there is no rush while you’re paddling on the river. You can take as much time as you want, soaking up the mind-blowing views. Additionally, there are several spots to stop and rest along the way. Between the historical sites on the urban waterfront, the views of the skyline, and the abundant wildlife, this could arguably be the best paddle trail in Maryland. And if you ask me, it’s a great way to spend the day in Baltimore.
The best time to paddle? Of course, the warmer months from May through October are the most ideal. However, expect the Harbor to be filled with more boaters and paddlers. This could also be a fun paddle trail on warmer winter days or in early spring. Plus, the waterways will have less traffic then.
