The Up-and-Coming City in Maine That’s Perfectly Sized

Caribou, Maine is one of the most beautiful cities to enjoy the outdoors—this is a truly gorgeous place with year-round recreation opportunities!

Maine is paradise for those of us who love the outdoors. This is a beautiful state, and there are so many ways to enjoy nature here. When visiting the Pine Tree State, you're never too far from a state park or hiking trail, even when you're in our largest cities. Our spread-out population and sprawling rural areas mean that we come in contact with nature a lot more often than those in more densely populated states.

Even our capital, Augusta, has a population of under 75,000. Places that might be considered small towns in other states are more like mid-sized cities here. One such city just happens to be the most northeastern city in the United States: Caribou. Its population of around 7,500 ensures that it's got plenty of man-made attractions like stores and restaurants, but it's not so crowded that you'll feel smothered. It's the perfect spot for a weekend getaway, especially if you want to enjoy the outdoors.

Caribou offers plenty to enjoy. This is a city that has a deep appreciation for history, and there are lots of spots to indulge in a bit of nostalgia. Sleeper's Market is a long-standing grocery store that's been around for more than a century. If you're craving a bite to eat, check out Burger Boy, a laid-back 1950s-style eatery that's a great alternative to chain fast food restaurants. The city is also home to the Caribou Historical Society & Whittier Museum, which is open seasonally and focuses on the rich history of life in Northern Maine.

However, the main draw in Caribou is undoubtedly the city's amazing natural surroundings. You won't find many places more beautiful than this little city. The Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge is a 5,252-acre preserve that encompasses parts of Caribou and several neighboring towns, and it's absolutely magnificent. Hiking, biking, and snowshoeing are all popular in the park, which houses countless species of mammals, birds, and reptiles. One of the most visited trails is the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge Beaver Trail, an easy 1.4-mile trek with loads of beautiful scenery along the way.

While Maine in the warm months is wonderful, you'll find just as much to do here in the wintertime. This is a great place for snowshoeing and snowmobiling, and there are 28 miles of multi-purpose trail to explore along the Aroostook Valley Trail, which runs from Presque Isle to New Sweden and passes right through Caribou. Caribou's status as one of the snowiest cities in Maine means that it's absolutely perfect for anyone looking to enjoy cold-weather activities.

Another attraction here that's perfect for year-round fun is Goughan's Farm. With u-pick berries in the summer months and holiday celebrations (plus homemade wreaths) throughout the fall and winter, there's no bad season to visit this fun Caribou farm.

Honestly, there's no bad place to enjoy the outdoors in Maine, but we think this little northeastern city is worth the trip to its remote location! If you'd like to stay for a few nights, we love this centrally-located cottage that's close to area attractions and near plenty of trails.
