Stonington, Maine offers stunning natural beauty, a thriving lobster industry, and rich cultural experiences.
No matter where you are in Maine, you won't find yourself far from the natural beauty of the state. Whether you're sitting next to the crashing waves of the coast or cozied up next to a campfire under the starry forest, Maine will keep nature lovers happy. But, there are some places in Vacationland that are remarkable when it comes to their access to breathtaking natural beauty. We have lots of examples, but today we're talking about Stonington!
Stonington is located in Hancock County, on the southern end of Deer Isle.
The entire town looks over the incredibly picturesque Penobscot Bay.
Looking out over the harbor provides views of nearby islands, including the more remote Isle Au Haut.
Stonington is supported by the lobster and fishing industry, leading the state in pounds and value of lobsters caught!
The town is also home to a fleet or more than 300 lobster boats.

Stonington has quite a few granite quarries, many of which are still in use today.
In the late 1800s, the quarries even supplied stone to historic spots including JFK's memorial at Arlington National Cemetery!
Popular recreation in Stonington includes boating, options for which are plentiful here!
But if you're more of a land-lubber, you can always head to the beloved Stonington Opera House for year-round live theater, music, dance and film events.
Or, you can hike through the hike through the 100-acre Crockett Cove Woods Preserve.
The Barred Island Nature Preserve is another lush, beautiful option located in Deer Isle.
Visits to the local preserves reveal lovely open fields, ponds and spruce with views of the surrounding area including Mount Desert.
Stonington is also an artists' haven, allowing for visits to galleries featuring woodwork, painting and pottery artists.
Whatever you do in Stonington, you certainly won't find yourself lacking in beautiful views!
