Earlier this year, I mapped out a Coastal Maine Road Trip for the launch of Only In Your State's interactive map feature, Routes. Having just visited Maine in January, I was full of ideas and inspiration regarding the scenic spots and roadside attractions for this feature.
I designed the Coastal Maine Route to easily fit into two days and allow lots of time for exploration at each point of interest. However, as Mary and I loaded into our rental car—a bright yellow Kia Sol—and set off, I quickly realized that there were lots more places I wanted to visit not included in the original route. So I did what I highly recommend when road tripping (and traveling, really): I made detours part of the journey and ended with the following adventure from Portland, Maine, to Mount Desert Island, Maine.
