One of the many benefits of living in Maine is the peace and quiet you can enjoy in many of its small towns. All throughout the state, there are small towns where life moves at a slower, more relaxing pace. One of these charming small communities is Castine in Hancock County. This waterfront community isn’t super tiny, but it’s definitely not large — it’s just the right size, and even better, it may just be the most peaceful place to live in Maine.
Located in eastern Maine, along the waters of Penobscot Bay, is the community of Castine. With approximately 1,000 residents, this town is small, yet perfect.
Castine has a rich seafaring history and is actually one of the oldest communities in North America. Its history dates back to the 1630s when the French built a fort in the area and called it Fort Pentagöet.
Today, Castine is best known as home to the Maine Maritime Academy. This public college focuses on maritime training.
During a visit to this town, I recommend walking around and admiring its beauty and peaceful nature. You’ll enjoy stunning architecture and friendly faces everywhere you go.
Even better, Castine’s Main Street slopes towards the sea, allowing you to experience some natural beauty and must-visit local attractions.
Step into the Wilson Museum where you can learn a little about history, places, and cultures. Using the incredible collection of geologist Dr. John Howard Wilson, you’ll see items like a Neanderthal stone axe, million-year-old fossils, and more.
For some time to yourself and with beautiful views surrounding you, head into Witherle Woods in Castine.
This is a 193-acre preserve on Castine Peninsula with gorgeous forests and breathtaking ocean views. It is a delightful day trip destination for hiking or even cross-country skiing.
And if you are like me, one day simply isn't enough time to experience the best small towns in Maine. That's why I recommend you book a stay at the Castine Inn.
This unique inn was built in 1898 and is just a short walk from the harbor on Main Street. Here, you'll find 19 guest rooms with private baths.
There’s no doubt you’ll find peace and quiet in the charming community of Castine. For more information, visit the Castine, Maine official website.
