This Hidden Diner in Maine Is a True Local Secret

One of the best hidden gems in Maine, the Maine Diner in Wells is a great place to get affordable seafood with the locals.

Coming from New Jersey, we know diners! The Garden State has the highest number of diners per square mile of any state in the country, and I've visited plenty of them. That's why, when I'm touring another state and I see a diner, I'm very likely to drop in and see what they have to offer. More often than not, it'll be a good place to get some local grub, but nothing overly memorable. Every once in a while, however, you find a true local secret that you can't wait to visit again next time you're in town.

That's definitely the case for the Maine Diner, the best undiscovered hidden diner in Maine. I first visited this place as a child during a family vacation, and I'm always happy to return. While it has all the classic diner food you'd expect, it also features some of Maine's signature dishes—heavy on the seafood. The prices are right, the quality is top-notch, and the locals are always welcoming to newcomers.

The Maine Diner in Wells has been open since the 1960s, but a lot of things haven't changed in that time. The delightful old-school diner still greets you with a classic neon sign beckoning you with the specials of the day—and they always sound delicious! This is your classic diner, but with some unmistakable Maine flair.

The Maine Diner had a brief flirtation with fame about fifteen years ago when Guy Fieri spotlighted it on his "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" show, but its location means that it's still largely unknown to visitors. It's also bigger than many diners, being home to a large gift shop with some quirky Maine souvenirs!

Get a table or belly up to the old-school counter; it doesn't make any difference—you'll still be ordering from the same massive menu! Breakfast is served all day and offers blueberry pancakes with pure maple syrup, while lunch and dinner offer everything from pulled pork to fried seafood.

Some of the Maine Diner's specialties include the famous lobster benedict, one of the most decadent ways to enjoy the state's signature food, and the acclaimed blueberry pie, which has been frequently called one of the state's best desserts.
