The Louisiana Town Where You Can Kayak the Bayou, Order Pain Perdu for Breakfast, and Hear Cajun French in the Streets
Thibodaux, Louisiana, is a bayou town boasting the charm of a French village
Looking for a place to visit in Louisiana that feels like a European vacation without the need for international travel? Thibodaux, Louisiana, nicknamed the "Queen City of Lafourche," is a small town situated on Bayou Lafourche, and it resembles a French village. And while Thibodaux’s history is indeed linked to French roots, there’s also influence from Spanish and African cultural influences from the people who arrived in the greater region in the early 18th century, as well as the French-Canadian immigrants — known as Acadians (or Cajuns) — who settled in this location in the mid-1700s.

Today, the city’s history is preserved within its beautiful historic buildings and interesting attractions. Travelers can head here instead of all the way across the Atlantic to admire some stunning, detailed French and European-inspired architecture. Gaze at the intricate trellis work on the balconies and the handcrafted old-world historical design details.
Thibodaux is the "parish seat" for this area of the state. Louisiana is divided into 64 "parishes" (which are equivalent to "counties" in other states). Louisiana's use of the term "parish" pays homage to the region's French and Spanish colonial past, when the boundaries of local governments often aligned with church parishes. The "parish seat" is the location of the administrative offices for the area. So, even though Thibodaux is the administrative hub and parish seat, its downtown is still an accessible, quaint, and walkable destination to explore.

For a bit more background on the town, Louisiana's Cajun Bayou gained its Cajun connections from Acadians who settled in the area after they were expelled from what was then New France (now Canada), so they were people of French descent. The term transitioned to "Cajun," and many people in the area today still speak Cajun French. Many things in the area labeled as Cajun have French roots, such as gumbo. Gumbo's origin is a mix of cultures, including French (it's made with roux—a mixture of fat and flour, cooked together to thicken sauces and other dishes)!

There are a few special spots here that exude distinct European vibes. This includes the St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, located just a few blocks from the banks of beautiful Bayou Lafourche and featuring Renaissance Romanesque-style architecture. You can also walk to the historic church and cemetery, rich in history, and take in the views of pretty houses along the way. Or, check out the Jean Lafitte Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, which is also a National Park site. For French culinary pursuits, the Pain Perdu at Spahr's (which translates to “Lost Bread” in French) is a legendary, must-try, tasty local treat.

While you’re in town, be sure to step into Fremin's, which was originally a drugstore dating back to the 1870s. In 1998, the Fremin brothers bought the building to restore it to its original glory. Today, it’s a beloved local restaurant that was inspired by the Fremin brothers' parents, serving a blend of Creole and Italian flavors. It's known for its signature seafood Napoleon.
For those who want to get out on the water, paddle down Bayou Lafourche by launching from Nicholls Bayou Side Park, which is located directly across from Nicholls State University. Or, start your journey at the downtown Thibodaux Floating Dock & Boardwalk. Here, you can either park your motorboat or paddle-powered boat or set this spot as a launch point for your kayak and paddleboard. And since it’s right downtown, it’s perfect to start your adventure exploring the range of restaurants and shops in Downtown.
