New Orleans has unique cultural quirks that set it apart from the rest of the country.

New Orleans is a special place, that’s for sure. There are so many things that set us apart from the rest of the country—heck, even the rest of Louisiana. Here are just a few interesting quirks New Orleans has that set us apart from the rest.

1. An impromptu dance party in the street is fairly common

With so many talented street musicians, it’s almost unavoidable.

2. "Don’t eat the dead ones" and "Suck the heads" are lessons taught from a young age

And don’t forget to pinch the tails.

3. Sandwiches are dressed

To be honest, this code for sandwich toppings should be applied everywhere. It just makes sense!

4. Our funerals have parades

It’s a celebration of life, after all.

5. We’re a fan of the monogram

If it can be monogrammed, we will do it.

6. These things? Not a grocery cart.

It’s a buggy.

7. The median isn’t called the median

It’s the neutral ground, we never say "median".

8. We make groceries

Not from scratch, of course…

9. Go Cups

Where else can you walk out of a bar with a go cup?

10. We’re friendly

We’ll talk to everyone! And we want to know how ya mama and ‘dem are doing, and where everyone went to high school.

11. Pronouncing New Orleans and Orleans Parish differently

You’d think it would be the same, but that would be too easy.
