Located about 20 miles south of Lafayette, Abbeville Louisiana is one of the most charming communities in Louisiana. Whether you want to spend a weekend of a lifetime here, there’s a lot to love about Abbeville. Join me as I highlight some of the best things to do in and around Abbeville:
The town hovers around a population of about 12,000 residents, making it the ideal little-big town.
You’ll have all of the modern conveniences of larger cities, but Abbeville still encapsulates that small-town charm that we love so much.
Sitting pretty in the heart of Cajun Country, Abbeville is a treasure trove for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Palmetto Island State Park is full of outdoor adventures including kayaking and hiking.
You can even hop in the car and check out neighboring attractions like the Rip Van Winkle Gardens.
There are 15 acres of gardens to explore, plus a fascinating history about the original owner of the house as well as Lake Peigneur.
Plus, you'll get to wander around with all of the colorful peacocks that call the gardens home!
Within the city, history lovers will thoroughly enjoy taking a stroll through the town and seeing the historic sites.
One must-see attraction in Abbeville is the Saint Mary Magdalen Church. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the historic church has both Gothic and Romanesque Revival details and dates back to 1911. It replaced the original church that stood here in 1844 but was destroyed in a fire in 1907.
The Louisiana Military Museum in Abbeville is another must-see while touring the town.
Just make sure to schedule a visit ahead of time.
From farmers markets to festivals, there's always something going on in Magdalen Square.
The Giant Omelette Celebration is one of my favorites. Chefs from around the world come together on the first weekend of November to make the world's largest omelette. It takes over 5,000 eggs to make this happen!
Speaking of food, you'll find no shortage of incredible restaurants in Abbeville.
RiverFront Restaurant in Abbeville is one of our favorites. Located right on the water, you can soak in those beautiful views while enjoying some of the best seafood in town.
