With a population that hovers just under 20,000, you wouldn't normally consider Natchitoches as a small town, but Louisiana's oldest city maintains a small-town charm that attracts visitors from all over the world, especially during the holidays. The Natchitoches Christmas Festival is one of the most cherished holiday events in Louisiana, and one of the few where you can still experience an old-fashioned Christmas.
The Natchitoches Christmas Festival has been a tradition since 1927.
This year celebrates its 96th year, and you won’t want to miss it.
The six-week festival runs from November 19, 2022 - January 6, 2023.
The entire downtown area transforms into a magnificent Christmas light show with millions of lights, holiday displays, and more.
Some of the main attractions are the holiday displays that illuminate the Cane River Lake.
As you stroll along the riverbank to admire the lights, you’ll find several food trucks and vendors peppered around to stop off for light refreshments.
Of course, Santa will be out and about.
He's ready and waiting for photos and wish lists!
There’s always something to look forward to during the festival, including live entertainment, kid-friendly activities, a lighted boat parade, and more.

Natchitoches has an impressive 33-block Historic District, and one of the most beloved events is the Christmas Tour of Homes.
Pictured above is the Prud’homme-Rouquier House, which was built in 1790.
There are a few different tours available, and you’ll learn all about the history of the homes on the walk.
The tour is about a mile long and will take about two hours to complete. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes! This is a walkable event only, it’s not one where you can drive from location to location. With that in mind, these tours are at the mercy of the weather, so be sure to check the event website for weather-related information.
Every Saturday night during the festival, keep an eye out for the magical fireworks display over the lake.
Weather permitting, the fireworks show happens every Saturday at 7 p.m.
