The One Place In Kentucky That Makes The Most Awesome Winter Day Trip

Getting out and about during the winter in Kentucky can sometimes be a challenge. It can get brutally cold, and the sun sets too early. However, Newport Aquarium located on Newport on Levee, just across the river from Cincinnati, can make a great day trip. You get be indoors, away from the winter weather, and experience one of the best aquariums in the country. And since it's located on Newport on the Levee, there are plenty of other activities, shops, and restaurants all around you.

Welcome to Newport on the Levee in Newport, KY. It's located right on the banks of the Ohio River, and has a gorgeous view of the Cincinnati skyline. There are numerous options for things to do for a fun winter day trip.

One of the most popular things to do on Newport on the Levee is visit the Newport Aquarium.

You can get up close and personal with the thousands of different sea animals, and even touch some of them. Newport Aquarium has 70 exhibits and 14 galleries.

They also have five tunnels you can walk through so that you are surrounded by fish.

You will also get the opportunity to see Sweet Pea, Scooter, Sunshine and Spike, who are the four shark rays at Newport Aquarium.

In 2007, the Newport Aquarium started the first captive breeding program for shark rays. Sweet Pea became the first shark ray ever to get pregnant and give birth in captivity.

You'll get the chance to actually touch some of the creatures in the tide pool. These creatures include starfish, anemones, and horseshoe crabs.

You can even pet some sharks. Visit Shark Central, where you will be taught the proper way to pet them.

There's more than just fish, though. The Aquarium has several different types of other animals, like penguins, otters, snakes, turtles, lorikeets, alligators, frogs, and more.

After touring the aquarium, there is so much more to do on Newport on the Levee. Finish your Christmas shopping, get a bite to eat, or enjoy their daily Christmas light shows that will continue until January 1.

The Grand Illumination happened on November 22, but light shows happen every day starting at 5:10 PM. Shows happen every 20 minutes until 11:50 PM.

You can also brave the cold for a bit as you walk along the riverfront and take in the stunning view of Cincinnati.
