This Luxurious Kentucky Getaway Feels Just Like France
Versailles, Kentucky, is a small town that evokes the feel of the French countryside. It has lush farmland and even a castle you can spend the night in.
I think it’s safe to say that France is a destination on almost everyone’s bucket list. The Eiffel Tower, the lush countryside, the French Riviera, fresh bread and pastries…there’s so much to see and experience. But an overseas trip isn’t always feasible, so what do you do when you want the magic and romance of France on a Kentucky budget? Luckily, the Bluegrass State has an answer for that. Versailles, Kentucky (pronounced “ver-sails” because our specialty is Southern charm, not sophistication), is a small town hiding a big secret. The quaint community is home to a majestic castle surrounded by lush farmland, and it’s reminiscent of a sprawling French estate.
Welcome to Versailles, Kentucky

With a population of just over 10,000, Versailles, Kentucky, is only 13 miles from Lexington, but it feels like its own little kingdom frozen in time. Nestled in the heart of horse country, Versailles resembles a postcard from the French countryside, with its pastoral landscape evoking feelings of peace and serenity. Even the downtown area features nods to France, with many buildings displaying Gothic and Renaissance architecture.
Downtown Versailles Is Full of Awe-Inspiring Architecture

In addition to distilleries, wineries, and horse farms, Versailles is best known for The Kentucky Castle, a hotel and restaurant on 100 acres where guests are treated like royalty. Perched on a hilltop, the castle is 50 years old, the vision of a couple inspired by the timeless opulence of European architecture during their honeymoon. Between its stately appearance and the farm-to-table restaurant that mirrors the fresh, locally sourced food culture of France, The Kentucky Castle is the next best thing to vacationing in Paris.
Visit the Awe-Inspiring Kentucky Castle

The castle boasts 18 guest accommodations, including four suites and a cabin. No matter which one you choose, prepare for a rejuvenating getaway that offers a perfect balance of upscale amenities and Southern hospitality. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to dine at Castle Farm, the on-site restaurant. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day, Castle Farm uses ingredients from its very own gardens to create seasonal dishes with quality you can taste. The menu changes frequently, but you can always expect to see lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, and a healthy dose of Southern flavor.
Discover the World-Renowned Distilleries

Of course, France isn't known for bourbon, but Versailles is located on the famed Kentucky Bourbon Trail, so a trip to Woodford Reserve Distillery is a must. Established in 1812, this historic distillery offers year-round tours and tastings. If you're more of a wine person, Wildside Winery is situated on 30 beautiful acres and has some of the best Cabernet Franc around. It's kid and pet-friendly, and you can imagine you're sipping a glass in Bordeaux when you look out on the lush, fertile landscape. You can also meet racehorses at several thoroughbred farms and learn all about how Kentucky's horse culture evolved.
The Charming Downtown Is Also Worth a Visit

Have you ever spent time in Versailles? If so, what are some of your favorite things about the charming town? For another taste of Europe in Kentucky, Covington's MainStrasse Village will transport you straight to Germany. It's known as the "Little Bavaria of Kentucky," with breweries, German architecture, and an annual Oktoberfest.
