Big South Fork Scenic Railway
If there's one stop you should absolutely make during your visit to Stearns, it's to Big South Fork Scenic Railway to explore the region's logging and coal history. This scenic train ride packs a punch with views as you ride 600 feet into the Big South Fork Gorge and make your way to the Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp. Spend some time at the outdoor museum and learn all about the coal mining community.
Your ticket also gives you access to the McCreary County Museum, the old Stearns Coal and Lumber Company corporate headquarters. Like many of the small communities nearby, Stearns began as a mining and lumber town. Both of these museums give you a fascinating glimpse of history through various photographs, artifacts, and more.
