We Bet You Didn’t Know This Small Town In Kansas Is Home To Likely The Only Outhouse Festival In The World
Elk Falls, Kansas, is a small town known for its unique annual Outhouse Festival and historic charm.
The word "unique" is overused - if you want to get technical, something can't be "most unique" or "so unique" - if something is genuinely unique, it's the only one of its kind. Not many things in the world are truly unique, but we've got something in Kansas that most certainly is. The little town of Elk Falls is hidden away in southeast Kansas and has a population of just over 100. It's host to an annual outhouse festival that's likely the only one of its kind in the world. This place has such a great sense of humor and is truly a blast!
Elk Falls boasts a not-so-massive population of just over 100 people. The little town is in southeastern Kansas's Elk County, right beside the Elk River. It's a historic place that was first settled by Europeans in 1870.
This small town has a real sense of humor and bills itself as the World's Largest Living Ghost Town due to its declining population.
Another example of the town's humor is its Elk Falls Outhouse Tour and Festival. The festival takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving as part of the town's annual open house.
The tour consists of around 20 outhouses, either homemade or renovated, competing for visitors' votes. Prizes include cash and a Outhouse Throne award, a stone chamber pot.
There's more to Elk Falls than just outhouses, though! You'll find a lovely truss bridge that was built in 1893. It's only open to foot traffic nowadays, but provides great views of the Elk River.
Another popular destination here is Elk Falls Pottery, a hometown shop that's been making beautiful handmade pottery for decades.
Whether you visit for the Outhouse Festival in November or just explore this small town in Kansas, you're sure to have a marvelous time in Elk Falls.
