It goes without saying that the Sunflower State is known for its small towns. Talk to an out-of-state resident, and they might be surprised even to learn that we do have larger cities. Small towns in Kansas are the heart and soul of the state, and from the teeny-tiniest to the more sizable, these places are special and worthy of a visit. If you're in need of a small-town getaway, one little place you don't want to miss out on is Chanute, Kansas. This small city in southeast Kansas has a population of approximately 8,500 residents, yet it offers visitors plenty to see and do. Check out this city that's worth exploring.
There are plenty of things to do in Chanute, Kansas. This small city, situated in the southeastern corner of the state, boasts a lively downtown area with plenty of fun activities, including festivals and regular farmers' markets.
If you visit during the warm months, the Maring Aquatic Center is the perfect place to cool off. It's open each summer and features a lazy river, a competition-sized pool, a water slide, and a fun play pool for young children. And don't forget Chanute's dining options, such as The Grain Bin Restaurant, offering a variety of home-cooked dishes (customers rave about the biscuits and gravy!).
This area of Neosho County also features several historic homes. Chanute was once a railroad town, and this was a bustling area back in the 1870s. You'll be able to see a variety of architectural styles in both the historic district and downtown. Visit the Chamber of Commerce for a self-guided walking tour brochure. Speaking of history, don't miss a visit to the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum while you're in Chanute. The museum celebrates the life of the Johnsons, a married pair of Kansas-born explorers who traveled the world in the early 20th century.
If you love hunting, fishing, clay shooting, and just spending time outdoors in general, a visit to Chanute's Lil' Toledo Lodge along the Neosho River might be just what the doctor ordered. This 15,000-acre sportsman's lodge has cabins and bunkhouses for overnight stays and several scenic private ponds and lakes.
One store you should check out in town is the soap shop at Summit Hill Gardens, where you can pick up a variety of handmade soaps, body creams, lotions, shampoo bars, and more. Summit Hill Gardens also features an on-site Airbnb. The Summit Hill Gardens Cottage is the perfect size for two, and guests can walk just about anywhere on the farm property.
