The Scenic Drive To Amana Is Almost As Beautiful As The Destination Itself
The Iowa Valley Scenic Byway offers a picturesque 77-mile drive through Iowa's heartland, leading to the historic Amana Colonies.
There are few communities in Iowa more beautiful than the Amana Colonies. These historic German villages are full of old-fashioned buildings, yearly festivals, and iconic restaurants. However, the drive to get there is just as beautiful - but far less well-known. The Iowa Valley Scenic Byway is a roughly 77-mile journey through central and eastern Iowa that takes you though some of the state's most beautiful landscapes and charming destinations. You can drive straight through and enjoy the scenery, or make a few stops along the way and experience some hidden gems in towns like Belle Plaine and Tama. No matter what you do, you're headed to the same place - the Amana Colonies, where it feels like the old days never stopped.
The Iowa Valley Scenic Byway is a one-of-a-kind drive through Iowa's heartland, and you'll never forget the path to Amana.
Much of the road is peaceful farmland and prairie, dotted in between with charming small towns and famous roadside stops.

Toward the small town of Tama, you'll find the Meskwaki settlement - the only native American settlement in Iowa, complete with a beautiful cultural center and museum.
The Haven Community Church in the tiny town of Chelsea is a historic building that's still an active house of worship.
In Belle Plaine, you'll find the famous Lincoln Cafe - a country luncheonette popular with locals for its hearty portions.
Hannen Lake in Marengo is a great place to stop for some recreation - or even go fishing!
Much of the drive goes along the beautiful Iowa river, which means you'll have many opportunities to get on the water.
But you're headed for Amana, and the gorgeous German-style architecture will let you know you've arrived at this famous town.
