One of the Most Historic Small Towns in Iowa Is Also Among the Most Haunted

This charming Iowa community of around 1,600 people is rich in history. It also may be the most haunted town in Iowa.

Ackley, Iowa, is located in the north-central part of the state, about a hundred miles northwest of Cedar Rapids and about the same distance north of Des Moines. The community is one of those charming small towns that we can't help but love. With a population of around 1,600 people, the town is surprisingly rich with culture and history and openly celebrates all the local talent and heritage with several unique exhibits around town. When the sun goes down, however, whispers circulate among the residents about a very different kind of living history in Ackley, or perhaps more aptly, non-living history. Is Ackley truly the most haunted town in Iowa? All the rumors center around one location: a beautiful but mysterious cemetery where residents claim to have seen unexplainable things. We think Ackley is worth a visit any time of the year, but during the Halloween season, it may be the perfect destination for the daring.

The roots of the town of Ackley date back to 1852, when the first European settlers arrived in the region and built a cabin. That cabin has grown into a thriving city of around 1,500 people today. If you're interested in learning more about the town's history first-hand, head to the Ackley Heritage Center, a collection of historic buildings and exhibits. There, you'll find an old, one-room schoolhouse, historic farm equipment, and collections of military artifacts from the wars in which many of the towns residents have fought. Ackley is proud of its military history, as a visit to the town's veterans memorial and Freedom Rock make clear.

Ackley doesn't have much of a dining scene, but it is the headquarters of SkyCone, a beloved ice cream brand seen at many state fairs and events.

In the fall, however, all eyes are on one place: Hazel Green Cemetery, a beautiful and quiet resting place... or is it? Over the years, Ackley residents and visitors have reported strange, paranormal occurrences, such as floating orbs, banging, and howling. The most haunted spot in the cemetery is an old gazebo, where people have claimed to observe an old woman rocking a baby, creating an intense sense of sadness in those who witness this apparition.
