These 10 Iowa Towns Have The Silliest Names But Are So Worth A Visit

Looking at a map of Iowa may be more entertaining than you think. This state is full of towns with odd, funny, and silly names. Here are 10 you'll want to visit.

1. What Cheer

This little town is home to one of Iowa’s biggest flea markets. The next epic event is scheduled for May 4-6, 2018.

2. Elkader

If the name sounds a bit foreign, that’s because this Iowa town was named after an Algerian resistance leader. Of course, this is a great place to get Algerian and North African food. Stop by Schera’s Algerian-American Restaurant at 107 S Main St., Elkader.

3. Pulaski

Count Pulaski gets credit for saving George Washington’s life and he also gets an Iowa town named after him. Be sure to attend the annual Pulaski Corn Show held in September.

4. Lost Nation

This is the second town settled on the land, here. The first town was destroyed by disease in the mid-1800s. Lost Nation is named in honor of that town.

5. Correctionville

This town has the longest place name in the state. During your visit, be sure to spend some time in Little Sioux Park. The town also has a two-mile bike trail encircling it.

6. Sac City

This is the one and only home of the World’s Largest Popcorn ball! How can you resist?

7. Beebeetown

The Twisted Tail is a fun stop in Beebeetown. Go to this Iowa town for the weird name, and stay for a great steak.

8. Jamaica

Just go there and get your picture taken with the sign. No passport necessary. You’ll also want to get photos taken in Norway, Denmark, New Vienna, Paris, and Panama. All located right here in Iowa, of course.

9. Scarville

This Iowa town was named for a local landowner named Ole Scar in 1904. Lake Mills just a few miles away, and it’s the closest town with a restaurant. Luckily, Teluwut Grille House & Pub is right on Main Street and it’s a great place to stop for a burger or ribs.

10. Zwingle

There are fewer than 100 Iowans living in Zwingle. It’s just 19 miles south of Dubuque, and worth the trip just so you can say you spent some time there. Strangely, you’ll drive through Key West between the two towns.
