Can’t Make It to Bavaria? This Indiana Town Has German Restaurants, a Cobblestone Square, and a Riverwalk to Match

Ditch the passports and long flights for this Indiana town. It boasts a peaceful riverwalk, gorgeous architecture, and a rich German heritage.

One of my favorite things about Indiana is its charming small towns with European vibes. For many of us who can’t make it overseas, a short getaway to these hidden gems is the perfect way to spend a weekend. When we visit these towns, I love that we can stroll through quaint Main Streets with gorgeous architecture, sip on a latte at a cafe, and shop for unique goods at a cute boutique. Another option? Take a peaceful stroll and marvel at the views by a tranquil lake after a long day. You can do that and more in Jasper, without a passport or a lengthy flight. A trip to this waterfront destination in Indiana will feel like you’re in Europe, soaking up the vibes.

Fun Fact: Jasper, Indiana, has a sister city in Germany called Pfaffenweiler. Many of the residents' ancestors came from this German town and settled here in the 19th century. Though the cities are miles apart, there is no shortage of European influence in this Midwestern destination. Originally founded in 1830, the city of approximately 17,000 residents has roots in farming and manufacturing. Today, this quaint riverside community is brimming with old-world charm and beauty.

You'll find Jasper in Southern Indiana, tucked on the banks of the Patoka River. The river is a haven for peaceful strolls and outdoor recreation. Locals and visitors enjoy kayaking and canoeing on the tranquil waterway. With its paved pathways, tumbling waterfalls, arch bridge, and lush greenery, the picturesque setting of the Jasper Riverwalk rivals those in charming riverside communities in Europe. It’s no wonder that this hidden gem was recently named one of America's 25 best small towns.

So, why do Hoosiers and visitors alike love this Midwestern destination? The short answer is to experience a piece of European heaven. Because the town is rich with German culture, many of the local attractions and restaurants pay homage to its heritage.

Since 1961, Schnitzelbank Restaurant has been a staple in the community. The rustic Bavarian-style decor makes the dining room feel like you’ve left the Midwest and landed in Pfaffenweiler. On the menu, choose from authentic German cuisine like sauerbraten, schnitzels, Bavarian pretzels, and bratwurst platters. Of course, you don’t want to skip ordering authentic beers and wines. Stop by Chocolate Bliss and Kitchen Essentials for tasty German sweets.

Aside from the eateries, the landmarks and historical sites in town have a European feel, as well. The town square is brimming with Classical Revival- and Victorian-style architecture, featuring buildings with Tudor arches.

Be sure to check out the Geode Grotto, a mesmerizing rock garden on the grounds of the former Providence Home. Built by Italian immigrant Father Phillip Ottavi, the shrine is truly a work of art inspired by a famous grotto in Lourdes, France. Other beautiful architecture can be seen at St. Joseph Catholic Church and Dubois County Courthouse. And the Jasper City Mill, a refurbished working mill along the river, is a must-visit to learn more about the history of the town.

Speaking of town, the delightful, pedestrian-friendly cobblestone square is lined with quaint shops, cafes, and more buildings with stunning architecture. It’s also a gathering spot for the yearly Jasper Strassenfest, a five-day summer festival with music, dancing, and games, paying homage to the town’s German heritage.

If that weren’t enough, I’d suggest taking a nostalgic train ride aboard the Spirit of Jasper at the Jasper Train Depot. Guests will enjoy a timeless journey through the picturesque countryside while savoring locally made beer and food, as well as domestic and European wines. You don’t want to miss this fun excursion. With the scenic riverwalk, beautiful architecture, German restaurants, and the town's rich heritage, a visit to Jasper will certainly feel like your own slice of Europe.
