Drop me in a spot, sprinkle in a history lesson and some time outdoors, add a good cup of coffee and a slice of pie, and I am as content as I will ever be. In the Hoosier State, I found this magic combination on the banks of the Wabash River in New Harmony. It's a small historic town in Indiana that feels like stepping back into a much simpler era. If you love these types of things as much as I do, you need to add New Harmony to your Indiana bucket list.

The History Behind This Small Historic Town in Indiana

The story of New Harmony differs from your standard frontier narrative. The area saw its first non-Native settlement in 1814 when a group of industrious German separatists known as the Harmonie Society arrived. Led by George Rapp, the Harmonists carved a functional, self-sustaining village out of what was then a dense wilderness. By 1825, they decided to relocate and sold the entire town to a Welsh industrialist named Robert Owen, who planned to create a revolutionary center for progressive education and science on the site.

While Owen's utopian vision eventually fell apart, the two groups left behind a combined architectural legacy that defines the community today. You can still walk among the original brick dormitories and wooden log cabins built by the Harmonists, which stand in contrast to the town's more modern additions, like the Atheneum. The latter serves as a visitor center and first stop before exploring the historic village.

New Harmony's downtown district is walkable and perfect for a few hours of exploring. One of the most popular stops—and a great way to enjoy a few peaceful moments in the outdoors—is the Harmonist Labyrinth. This carefully manicured hedge maze was originally planted by the early settlers as a physical space for quiet reflection, and walking its winding paths is a unique way to experience local history. You should also make time for the Roofless Church, a mid-20th-century open-air architectural marvel that honors the community's deep spiritual roots.

If you're like me and always looking for an excuse to hit the trail, you won't have to travel far. New Harmony is just minutes from Harmonie State Park, with its deep ravines and wooded footpaths. In the fall, the entire park transforms into a vibrant canvas of reds and golds, making it, I think, one of the most picturesque spots in southern Indiana.

Compared to other historic towns in Indiana, New Harmony offers a good amount of hospitality and comfort. Plan on grabbing dinner at the Red Geranium Restaurant at the New Harmony Inn. A beloved local institution, this eatery is famous for its seasonal menu, which you should absolutely follow up with some of their legendary desserts (this is where the pie comes into play).
