The Remote Town in Indiana We Simply Can’t Get Enough Of

Harrison County, Indiana, is a nice little place with some truly memorable small towns despite being isolated in many parts. As a result of this isolation, though, we end up with some truly wonderful places to visit (and maybe even move!), like New Amsterdam. As of the 2020 census, this little Hoosier town had a population of - hold up - 12.

Just 12 people in a little town way off in the boonies? It sounds like my kind of town. There are hundreds of small towns in Indiana, but this town in particular is a delight I can't quite put my finger on.

New Amsterdam was platted in September 1815, making it over 200 years old. Amazingly, the population has always been pretty small around here; the community is tight-knit, and quite literally, everyone knows everyone. If you're ever looking for a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, this one's perfect for the occasion.

This town is located right on the banks of the Ohio River, and as a result, it's quite scenic. In the old days, the town relied on this river for commerce and economy. Nowadays, it's a beautiful backdrop for a cute little town (and there's always something fun going on). It's quiet, but you can find all kinds of things; the town isn't terribly far from Lake Monroe, which is a treat, and the beautiful rolling green hills of southern Indiana make for a jaw-dropping backdrop.

New Amsterdam teeters on the state line between Indiana and Kentucky, but in that game of tug-o-war, we already won; this little town is ours and ours alone, and for some reason, I love it. It's tiny. It's cute. It's everything you want from a tiny, rural river town.

When it comes to notable town history, there's at least one story I can come up with off the top of my head: the intense and terrifying Ohio River Flood of 1937 nearly made a ghost town out of this little place, but thankfully, the town's people are plucky and strong. They rebuilt, and they're doing better than ever, even if there's only a small handful of folks who call the town home.

This tiny town in Indiana is so small that it doesn't have its own website or Facebook page. There are several awesome hiking trails in and near town, and you can explore Lake Monroe in a day or two. When I say this town is small, I definitely mean it - it's itty-bitty, and that's all a part of its charm.
