Evansville Is a Walkable City in Indiana Known for Its River History
Lovers of small town vibes, this one's all for you: beautiful Evansville is one of the most walkable cities in Indiana.
Nestled in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, is a delightfully walkable city that's somehow become one of my favorites lately. It's a delight for so many reasons; though, as one of the most walkable cities in Indiana, it's perfect for those who don't have cars (or would prefer not to rent one). Let's explore this cute little slice of paradise that will thrill and delight you. What's it called, you might ask? Evansville, Indiana.
The list of things to do and see in this town is seemingly endless; one could live here for most of one's life and still not quite do everything. With museums, a wonderful zoo, and even its own baseball team, Evansville is the perfect example of everything that's right with small towns. It's big enough for plentiful resources and attractions of all kinds, but small enough to explore on foot.
One of my favorite things to do in town is explore Wesselman Woods, which is home to numerous incredible hiking trails and other outdoor activities. Here, you'll find wildlife, wetlands, woodlands, and lots of other jaw-dropping wonders; it's big enough - and interesting enough - to make an entire day trip out of, and I strongly recommend it.
Another strange and wonderful must-see in Evansville is Whispering Point at the University of Evansville. It's bizarre and intriguing; if you stand right in the center of it and speak, you'll hear your own voice echoing back at you. Nobody's really sure why this happens - but it's fun to play with!
During the holiday season, downtown truly comes alive. With endless festivals, holiday markets, ice skating, and so much more, the holiday season might just become your new favorite season (if it isn't already) once you've been to this delightfully quaint Indiana town.
Evansville is home to an assortment of awesome historical and cultural sites, including a dozen intriguing earthen mounds that are among the best examples of earthen mounds in the nation; known as Angel Mounds State Historic Site, this one's a must-see for anyone with even a little bit of curiosity about the region's amazing history.
For me, part of Evansville's overall charm is its walkability; you never have to wander too terribly far to reach seemingly anything, and there's an assortment of wonderful restaurants and eateries, as well, so you'll never run out of dining options while in town. You'll find new favorites you'll realize you want to return for - over and over again!
Additionally, you'll want to take a stroll along the Evansville Riverwalk. Here you can find great views of the Ohio River alongside some public art. Or, visit the Reitz Home Museum. This is a Victorian mansion filled with its original and historic furnishings. For something more interactive, the Koch Family Children's Museum of Evansville is a great option for families.
At the end of the day, Evansville proves that charm, culture, and convenience can coexist beautifully. Whether you’re wandering its walkable streets or discovering its hidden gems, this riverside city is well worth a visit. Feeling inspired?
