The Up-and-Coming City in Hawaii That’s Perfectly Sized

There's no shortage of wonderful places to visit here, and if you're looking to add yet another up-and-coming city in Hawaii to your must-visit list, I've got a great one for you today: Kahului.

Where Kahului Is Located

This bustling, unincorporated community on the island of Maui functions as its main hub. Kahului has it all, with a great mix of incredible nature and man-made attractions that make it the perfect place for a getaway.

You'll find Kahului on the north central side of Maui, right along the bay that shares its name. This is a harbor community with the island's main airport (OGG) and industrial centers. Its population, according to the 2020 U.S. Census, is approximately 28,200.

Shopping and Culture in Kahului

Kahului is considered the county's retail and shopping district, so there's a lot to check out if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket. The Maui Swap Meet takes place each Saturday morning (around 7 a.m.–1 p.m.) on the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College grounds. This fun open-air market attracts sellers of all kinds, and you'll find everything from food to handmade crafts.

The Maui Mall Village is another favorite, offering plenty to enjoy, from one of the island’s largest multiplexes—the 12-screen Regal Maui Mall Megaplex—to museums and cultural centers such as the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center.

Natural Beauty and Outdoor Adventures in Kahului

Of course, people don't typically come to Hawaii just for shopping and museums; it's the natural beauty that draws people here. Kahului possesses that in spades, and some of the best scenery on Maui is right in this area.

The West Maui Loop (comprised of Honoapiʻilani Highway and the Kahekili Highway) connects to the Kahului/Wailuku area. The northern portion of this drive is a thrilling ride with sweeping panoramas, often considered one of the most scenic roads in Hawaii, despite the perilous-looking cliffs on some stretches.

Note: parts of the Kahekili Highway are very narrow, with blind corners and little shoulder space, so take it slow and drive carefully.

If you'd prefer to explore the area on foot, there are a number of great options for a hike or stroll. Kanaha Beach Park offers spectacular views of the West Maui Mountains rising in the distance—and really, can you get much better than a walk along a Maui beach? The Maui Nui Botanical Gardens also preserve local Hawaiian plants and provide a quiet, peaceful spot to wander.
