The New Georgia Encyclopedia tells us that Macon has more churches per capita than any other city in the south. The Episcopalians were the first denomination to organize in Augusta in 1825, joined shortly by Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians in 1826. Over 60% of Macon's population is religious.
