Suwanee in Georgia is a small agricultural town outside of Georgia known for its quality of life and tight-knit community.
The history of Suwanee began as an Indian village where the Suwanee Creek and the Chattahoochee River meet.
For hundreds of years, the land of Suwanee was coveted, as the river gave way to a flourishing agricultural community.
The area was even referred to as "Suwanee Old Town" on maps dating back to the early 1800s.
Suwanee became officially recognized as a town in 1838 once the Post Office was established and afterward became a town known for its railroad ties.
In the late 1800s, Suwanee contained less than 40 homes and just above 200 residents.
While the population has risen since then, the charm and history that Suwanee holds haven’t changed much.
Throughout the 1950s-1970s Suwanee stayed primarily a town that catered to the agricultural needs of the community as well as the state, but development began growing the town tenfold.
Now, Suwanee is a mix of both historic pride and modern, emerging businesses.
Visiting Downtown Suwanee will provide you with a fun and fresh glimpse into the history of the town, especially as it has been accredited by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Program.
