Few People Know There’s A Beautiful State Park Hiding In This Tiny Georgia City
General Coffee State Park in Nicholls, Georgia, offers bird-watching, hiking, camping, and historical sites, making it a unique and beautiful destination.
Southeast Georgia is a beautiful place, with unique landscapes and tons of attractions. It's home to several magnificent state parks, one of which is tucked away in the tiny city of Nicholls. This little Coffee County city near Douglas has a population of about 3,000 residents. It's probably best known for being the site of the Coffee County Correctional Facility prison, which actually houses more prisoners than the town has residents! One other famous site here is General Coffee State Park. This 1,500-acre state park was named for Congressman and military leader General John E. Coffee, who is also the namesake for Georgia's Coffee County. There's a lot to see and do in this great state park - it's great for bird-watching, hiking, and camping, plus it's got several historical sites and hosts festivals and events throughout the year. Check it out:
The Seventeen Mile River flows right through the park, lending itself to plenty of beautiful views.
It also provides park visitors with an opportunity to get out on the water.
There are many historical artifacts here for visitors to check out, including an old tobacco barn, a corn crib, a cane press, and more.
The cypress swamps within the park are beautiful and serve as a home for many endangered species.
There are lots of campsites here, whether you're interested in primitive camping or have an RV to set up. There's nothing like spending the night by the water - it's one of my favorite places to camp.
This is such a lovely state park that's sometimes overshadowed by other more famous names, but definitely worth a visit.
