Florida is one of the best states for road trips, from the tree tunnels to the coastal drives. This particular drive is one of our favorites because of its beauty as well as the number of fun stops along the way.
The Broward County A1A Scenic Highway consists of a 32-mile stretch of State Road A1A from Deerfield Beach down to Hallandale Beach.
Start your journey with a visit to this clean, quiet, and beautiful beach. If you have the time, you can also try out the country's longest cable ski course, which is similar to water skiing but with a cable instead of a boat.
Next, be sure to stop at the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, a still-working historic lighthouse built in 1907. If you get hungry, Cap's Place, located in Lighthouse Point, is an unforgettable place to grab a bite. This Old Florida gem has many stories to tell, including its past as a 1920s speakeasy.
As we continue our journey, we'll move south to Fort Lauderdale. Here, we recommend touring the beautiful historic home and gardens at Bonnet House. This museum, full of unique art and antiques, will transport you to South Florida the way it was at the beginning of the 20th century.
There are actually nine distinct beach communities along this relatively short drive, each with its own natural beauty and special attractions. When you make it to Dania Beach, you have to stop for dinner and/or a monster sundae from Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor. This famous old fashioned ice cream shop and restaurant is covered with fun and kitschy memorabilia that will bring back fond memories of your childhood.
Another notable stop is the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, a beloved oceanfront promenade and a family-friendly space to walk, shop, and eat while enjoying scenic views of the beach.
That's just a few of the highlights of this scenic drive, with many more wonderful restaurants and attractions to check out, as well as unbeatable ocean views along the way.
