4 Small Towns in Florida So Dreamy, You’ll Swear You’ve Seen Them on TV
These gorgeous Florida small towns feel like they belong on TV.
Miami and Orlando are darlings of the silver screen. These photogenic cities have been included in so many movies and TV shows that even people who’ve never visited have an idea of what they look like. But Florida is full of magic if you know where to look, and it has many small towns whose charm rivals that of either city. When you dare to explore the state's lesser-known areas, you often stumble upon places with colorful rows of historic homes, friendly tight-knit communities, and natural wonders that you won’t easily find elsewhere.
Although I’ve traveled all over the world, my home state is still one of my favorite places to explore. I love going on long road trips that take me through hidden corners and little-known spots. Although I sometimes end up in underwhelming places, more often than not, I’m blown away by the beauty of what I find. These four dreamy small towns in Florida are perfect destinations for travelers who love off-beat vacations.
1. Everglades City

There is no place in the world like the wild, untamed Everglades. This isn’t a hyperbole: the ecosystem is endemic to Florida. You can access the Everglades from many parts of the state, but none are as interesting as Everglades City. This tiny town, with only 400 residents, is completely surrounded by a unique ecosystem, so life here revolves around it. Houses on stilts dot the edges of the water, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors abound. While you can do the typical airboat rides (which are definitely worth it), there are also one-of-a-kind attractions. Book a Big Cypress Gallery swamp walk to wade waist-deep in the water with famed photographer Clyde Butcher. Or go on a jeep tour looking for wildlife. And if you decide to hunt for invasive pythons, remember to bring your catch to Wildman’s Pizza and exchange it for a free meal.
2. Stuart

I’ve never understood why Stuart isn’t more popular with tourists — though I’m happy that this pretty town has remained somewhat of a secret. Its most stunning feature might be the banyan tree tunnel that transforms St. Lucie Boulevard into a perfect picture backdrop. Downtown’s cute pastel buildings and walkable streets could easily work as a movie set as well. It's always a fun place to go shopping at boutiques or to eat at locally-owned restaurants that serve food made with love. To enjoy nature, visitors can drive south of town to visit Blowing Rocks Preserve, where a limestone shoreline presents a natural show whenever the ocean crashes against it.
3. Dunnellon

Once a thriving railroad town in the middle of Florida, Dunnellon is now best known for being the gateway to the gorgeous Rainbow Springs State Park. Of all the springs I’ve visited, this might just be the one that’s left the deepest impression. Its cold turquoise waters, surrounded by green forest, are simply hard to forget. I also often find myself fantasizing about floating down the Rainbow River on a hot summer day, watching the grassy riverbed dance with the current. Besides fun in the water, Dunnellon offers numerous hiking and biking trails. The town itself is worth exploring, especially the historic downtown district that boasts shops, galleries, and restaurants operating in 19th-century houses.
4. Tarpon Springs

Greek flags dominate the Tarpon Springs marina, making this Gulf Coast town feel like a slice of Europe. This area of Florida is blessed with abundant sea sponges, which historically attracted large numbers of Greek immigrants who already had experience fishing for the animal. While sponges are no longer the town’s primary economic activity, they remain an integral part of local culture and identity. People have held on to their Greek heritage with pride, so you’ll find a Greek Orthodox church and Greek restaurants all around town. Tarpon Springs is a great spot for those looking to “leave” Florida without leaving Florida.
