This Petite Paradise Florida Tourist Attraction Is A Perfect Day Trip Adventure
There are only so many people who come to Florida already knowing in advance they want to visit Peanut Island. To this day, it still remains much of a hidden gem within Palm Beach County. However, this petite paradise attraction is beloved by locals, especially anyone looking to spend a day on the water snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, or dropping anchor. Hidden away in the shimmering waters of the Intracoastal Waterway near Riviera Beach, Peanut Island is a dream and the perfect day trip adventure.
If you’re anything like me, and you prefer to enjoy day trips in Florida, being outside, and enjoying activities on the water, then you’re going to fall in love with Peanut Island.
This compact paradise, overlooked by many, is accessible solely by boat, which just adds to the allure of visiting.
Guests can take a water taxi departing from Riviera Beach Marina Village, around $18 per person, and be taken directly to the island boasting shimmering turquoise waters and pristine sandy shoreline.
What I love the most about this island is that it provides a variety of activities, like snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking, away from the usual crowds found at other nearby beaches.
But it isn’t just natural beauty that makes Peanut Island so special. It’s also the history! Originally formed in 1918 from dredged materials during the Lake Worth Inlet's construction, the island earned its name from a failed plan to establish a peanut oil shipping terminal.
Later, amidst the Cold War tensions of the 1960s, it gained further significance as a secret nuclear bunker for President John F. Kennedy! You can still see the bunker to this day.
Today, Peanut Island spans 80 acres, featuring amenities like camping sites, picnic areas, and a scenic 1.25-mile walking trail. Snorkeling reigns supreme here, with a vibrant artificial reef attracting a myriad of marine life.
Rental options for snorkeling gear and shuttle boats to the island are readily available, ensuring a seamless adventure for visitors.
For those seeking a longer retreat, Peanut Island offers 17 reserved tent sites, providing an immersive overnight experience amidst nature's tranquility.
So plan a trip to Peanut Island, and prepare yourself for a hidden gem Florida attraction that might find it’s way to the top of your to-do list.
