It doesn’t get much better than life by the sea in Cedar Key, Florida. This enchanting and historic town in Florida is a sensational spot for a day trip, as there is so much to see and explore. As an island city off the state's northwest coast, Cedar Key was a very busy port decades ago. What was once the second-largest city in Florida in the 1880s, the destination now houses just over 700 full-time residents. 

I could easily spend my days getting to know the friendly folks in this low-key destination. It’s the kind of place where slow travelers can soak up local culture. With museums, nature trails, restaurants, and much more, the town attracts writers, artists, and tourists galore who are inspired by its historic charm and beauty. The vibes of this delightful destination create the perfect itinerary for a weekend trip in Florida. Let's explore all of the things to do in Cedar Key, shall we?

Cedar Key, Florida, is a hidden gem town on the northwest coast that boasts beauty, nature, and tons of history. Filled with local stores and museums, this once-thriving port town is now a timeless day-trip adventure, filled with historical elements dating back almost a century.

It's important to note that this area was affected by Hurricane Helene in 2024. Rebuilding efforts are continuing, but it's a long road to restore the buildings impacted by the storm. Follow the Cedar Key Historical Society to see the progress and any updates. There is also a link on the website to donate, which will go towards continuing to restore these historic buildings so that we may continue to enjoy them.

Many of the buildings in the town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the iconic Steamers Clam Bar and Grill. Unfortunately, due to fires and natural disasters, the building located along the Cedar Key Pier suffered tremendous damage, but it will be restored to its original glory soon. Eventually, visitors will be able to step back in time and soak up the history and the views from this waterfront restaurant. In the meantime, stop by the 2nd Street Cafe to savor some of the delicious seafood selections from Steamers restaurant.

Anyone looking for an outdoor adventure can find it here in Cedar Key. Once you take to the water, there are various channels and salt marshes to explore. Plus, the Cedar Key Public Beach offers swimming, picnicking, birdwatching, and kayaking. This dog-friendly oasis is great for spending the day with the entire family. If you're not into spending time on the water, stay on land and visit the various historic hotspots throughout town. Whether you choose to explore Cedar Key via the water or on land, you're sure to have endless amounts of fun.

Another must-visit location? The Cedar Key Historical Society. This is a huge draw for visitors, especially history buffs, as it dedicates space for all of the area’s best heritage elements. Here, visitors to Cedar Key can learn the history of the area through the various exhibits and photographs, plus staged areas within the two on-site buildings.

Or check out the Cedar Key Museum State Park for a few hours during your trip. The park is situated on 18 acres, offering hiking trails, picnic areas, and more. While the museum suffered some hurricane damage, the historic mid-century building is open with limited hours. Here you'll find various on-display items collected by Saint Claire Whitman, a local resident and the person responsible for establishing the first museum in his home.

Although the town is still recovering, locals welcome visitors to spend an afternoon in a place where time stands still, and the charm of the Gulf radiates with every step. With the resilience of the community, I have no doubt that Cedar Key will be back to the destination that it once was (sooner than we know it).
