10 Favorite Bites, Sights, and Activities From My Trip to the Emerald Coast

Walton County, Florida, offers more than sugar-white beaches—it’s a culmination of culinary creativity, architectural beauty, and small-town warmth. From sipping local spirits in Santa Rosa Beach to strolling the serene streets of Alys Beach, here’s how one corner of the Emerald Coast redefines the art of a coastal getaway.

Arriving in Walton County, Florida, I carried with me a handful of assumptions—the kind that tend to cling to regions you’ve only passed through, never fully explored or given due. But within days, those notions dissolved, replaced by something far richer: awe, delight, and the unmistakable feeling of discovery. Along the famed Emerald Coast, Walton County reveals itself as more than just a stopover; it’s a destination that demands to be savored.

Over the course of four days, I found myself immersed in an unexpectedly vibrant rhythm of coastal beauty, local flavor, and small-town charm. From its sugar-white sand that never gets hot to its flourishing culinary scene, this stretch of the Gulf Coast made me question why I had spent so long overlooking it. What I left with wasn’t just an itinerary of recommended bites and sights, but a renewed appreciation for one of Florida’s most captivating corners.

1. Seaside, Florida

alt

Seaside, Florida, is a pastel dreamscape along the Gulf Coast where coastal ease meets deliberate design. Wandering its tidy streets after stopping for coffee, I was struck by the way ocean air mingled with the buttery scent of fresh pastries. At the same time, colorful cottages and bustling markets set the stage for an afternoon that felt both leisurely and alive. From boutiques spilling onto sunlit sidewalks to cafés that invite you to linger with a coffee in hand, Seaside proved an effortless introduction to Walton County’s distinctive rhythm of life. Pro tip: Visit on a Saturday afternoon in order to get a taste of the centerpiece farmers' market.

2. Iron & Grape, DeFuniak Springs

alt

In DeFuniak Springs, I found one of the trip’s most delightful surprises: Iron & Grape. Equal parts cozy wine bar and neighborhood gathering place, it offered a curated list of vintages and craft brews that felt surprisingly cosmopolitan in this small-town setting. I sat upstairs in the speakeasy-style room, sipping a fabulous Sauvignon Blanc while dining on flavorful, cheesey pizzas, fresh beet salads, and one of the best cheesecakes I've ever sunk my fork into. While I didn't partake in the Kangaroo pizza (yes, you read that right), it did receive rave reviews from my dining companions.

3. Distillery 98, Santa Rosa Beach

alt

A short drive away in Santa Rosa Beach, Distillery 98 distilled Walton County’s entrepreneurial spirit into every bottle. Touring the facility offered a behind-the-scenes look at the meticulous process behind their vodkas, while the tasting room poured inventive cocktails that captured both precision and playfulness. What really blew my mind here was the commitment to sustainability, with bottles made of actual cardboard. Not only does this help reduce the company's carbon footprint, but it also allows beach-goers, boaters, and picnickers the chance to enjoy their beverages without having to tote around glass. Pro tip: Try the infused spicy vodka, which was a flavorful bout of heat that was a highlight of my culinary trip.

4. DeFuniak Springs Library

alt

Back in DeFuniak Springs, the town’s library revealed itself as a quiet jewel. With its historic architecture and shelves that balanced local lore with contemporary reads, the DeFuniak Springs Library was the kind of place that captured time in one single building. This library is the oldest continuously operating public library in the state, having been open since 1887. Make sure to take time to explore the area by the front desk, where you can see a signed copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, a gift to the library from Harper Lee herself. Also, enjoy the Regina music box, a historical instrument that is as rare as they come.

5. Roux 30A, Santa Rosa Beach

alt

For dinner, Roux 30A in Santa Rosa Beach was a culinary revelation. This meal was a rarity in itself, as a six-course tasting menu with wine pairings was offered, with communal dining tables lit by candlelight. Not only did we have a full view of the kitchen and the preparation of our meals, but the sous chef also guided us through the dining experience, one plate at a time. While I would love to recommend a particular dish or two, the menu changes so frequently that by the time you read this, it's likely already been updated.

6. Amavida Coffee

alt

When mornings called for caffeine, Amavida Coffee quickly became a beloved default. A local roaster to the area with global sensibilities, it delivered more than just excellent espresso; it offered a sense of place. I was able to tour the actual coffee roastery (which provides tours monthly) and learn the process from bean to brew. Another small business focused on sustainability, I appreciated Amavida's dedication to environmental awareness and the steps it took to become a certified B Corp.

7. Alys Beach, Florida

alt

Then there was Alys Beach, an architectural reverie rendered in white stucco and Mediterranean lines. Its sun-soaked streets, shaded courtyards, and sculpted fountains made every stroll feel cinematic. My camera reel became overloaded with the images I captured during the afternoon I spent here, with every corner, pocket, and street providing something new. Despite its polished beauty, the town retained a walkable intimacy that invited you to linger, not simply admire. One visit, I was already Googling how to return and spend a week here.

8. The Citizen, Alys Beach

alt

For a quick cocktail, that also doubled as my favorite of the entire trip, I visited The Citizen, right on the courtyard corner in Alys Beach. Grabbing a seat at the oyster bar, I watched as the staff set to work shucking, quality testing, and preparing fresh oysters for the patrons. My drink, an Americano, was the perfect aperitif, with a blend of Campari and sweet vermouth, topped with club soda. The Citizen was airy and bright, with a seamless indoor-outdoor setting that made the most of Florida’s light.

9. Gallion's, Rosemary Beach

alt

Nearby, in Rosemary Beach, Gallion’s distilled Southern coastal hospitality onto every plate. With seafood-forward dishes like blue crab claws and Southern staples reimagined with polish (looking at you, Pimento cheese dip), it was a restaurant that invited both comfort and curiosity. Lunch was anything but ordinary here, and the end of the meal became my favorite bite of the entire weekend: a carrot cake slice that could've fed half the restaurant. It was sweet, but not overly sweet, with an added crunch of caramel corn. At Gallions, come for the service (thank you, Reese!) and stay for the carrot cake.

10. NEAT Bottle Shop & Tasting Room, Alys Beach

alt

And finally, at NEAT Bottle Shop & Tasting Room in Alys Beach, I discovered a haven for anyone drawn to craft beverages. With an extensive selection of wines, whiskies, and small-batch spirits, it was both shop and salon, an environment where cocktail curiosity came naturally. A tasting led by staff who blended expertise with genuine enthusiasm made it clear: this was less about products than about cultivating an experience, one bottle at a time.
